"You two say any more shit or scare my little brother and sister again, and I swear Dominic I will skin you both alive." I say, glaring into his brown eyes. I glance back over at his friend, then grab Carla and walk into their room. I set Niko down on the floor, tears still streaming down his face. "Are you okay?" I ask not knowing what to do, Carla and Niko just walked in on Dominic holding a gun to my head and his friend breaking into our house. "No, they- they were going to hurt you." He says, his voice brittle and thin. "Niko, they weren't going to hurt me, I told you they carry guns to protect themselves from the people that hurt dad." "Then why were they pointing it at you?" Carla asks, joining in on our conversation. "They thought that I was like a bad guy that hurt dad." "Why?" Niko asks, confused. "I don't know, maybe another bad man told them I was bad." I tell them, not knowing what I should've told them."Come on, let's try and go to bed." I say, trying to change the subject. Niko and Carla turn around and crawl into bed. "I'll be okay, I'll talk to them and get everything sorted out." I tell them. "Okay, I love you Koko." Niko says, "I love you Kota, goodnight." Carla chimes in trying to smile, but I could tell she really couldn't. "I love you both too, goodnight, we can talk more in the morning." "Okay" They say. I walk out of the room and turn around fully expecting to have a gun pointing to my head. But Dominic and his friend had left, and I was met with an empty kitchen and a broken door.
I don't even know where I should start. My hand was still somewhat bleeding, there was dried blood on the floor, my back door was broken, and my pizza guy still hadn't been here to give me my pizza. I figured I would start with cleaning up my hand and disinfecting it. I walk into the bathroom and crouch down under the sink to get the rubbing alcohol and something to wrap my hand with. I lean over the sink and put the alcohol on a cotton pad and disinfect the area, I wince at the pain. I felt a burning sensation on my hand while I was rubbing the alcohol on my cut. Once I was done I then wrapped it up with some gauze, then walked through my bedroom back into the kitchen. I got a rag soaked in water then got down on the floor and wiped all the blood up. I hadn't realized how much blood I actually lost until I was cleaning it up. The back door, I wasn't too sure how I was going to fix it. The lock was busted, and the handle was completely off laying on the floor. This was all too much for me, Dominic broke into my house, his friend broke my door, and worst of all Carla and Niko could've gotten hurt because of me. I just sit down on the floor resting against the cabinet, feeling tears running down my face. With everything going on my phone fell on the ground, I leaned forward to grab it and dial Mrs Smith to come over. She's the only one who would know how to help me.
"Mrs Smith?" I say hearing my own voice tremble. "Honey?" She asks me frantically, "What's wrong? What happened?" "I'm sorry, I know it's late but can you come over? I need help please." My voice cracking with every word I say. "Of course honey, I will be there as soon as I can."
After 30 minutes of me not being able to see due to the tears collecting on my eyelashes Mrs Smith finally walks through the door. "Dakota?" She sees me on the ground, my eyes puffy, "Sweetheart what happened? Are the kids okay? Are you okay?" She asks me, crouching down sitting next to me. "No, I'm not, remember the men at dads funeral? They came by the house tonight, they broke in. I'm fine, but they woke up Carla and Niko.." I say words barely being able to come out of my mouth. "They saw everything Mrs Smith. Everything. One of the men had a gun to my head and cut my hand open, the other broke the back door. And to top it all off my pizza guy hasn't arrived with my pizza yet." She lightly chuckles, "Sweetheart, the pizza place closed 2 hours ago." "Then who did I give my money to so I could have a pizza?" I wailed, wanting to laugh. "I don't know Dakota, but is your hand okay?" She asks me. "Yes, I cleaned it and wrapped it all up, but what am I going to do about the kids?" I ask, "They just saw their sister almost get shot, and months ago their dad just died." "Dakota it will be okay we can talk to them-" She says but I cut her off, "No you don't understand, you shouldn't hear the pain in Nikos voice, he said " I already lost daddy I can't lose you too." You shouldn't hear the pain in his voice, and Carla, she was just standing in the corner shaking not knowing what to do." "I know it must've been a lot for them, but they are going to be okay, we will talk to them in the morning and everything will be okay." She says her hand rubbing my back, trying to reassure me. "I just- I need to get out of here, I need a vacation, I need to go somewhere where those men wouldn't find us, far away from here." She sits there looking at me for a moment thinking, "Do you think the kids would be okay with that too? Leaving for a few days and getting a restart." "Probably, Niko has been getting bullied at school everyday, and he hasn't really been doing a lot, and you know Carla, anything that gets her out of school." I say laughing, "But I think it would be good for them if we went somewhere for a few days, I just don't know where to go." She smiles at me, "Well honey, I'm going to Abigails for a few days, going to help her with the diner and spend time with her, I was going to ask you guys if you wanted to come with me. Don't worry, you would be able to work at the diner so you wouldn't have to worry about money." "Really?" I wiped the tears from my face smiling at her, that was the first good news I've heard all day. "That would be amazing actually, it would get the kids away from school so they could have a break, it would get all of us away from the men at my dads funeral, and we would all be together so everything would be okay." "Yes, you would all be together, so do you want to come?" She asks me. "What day are you leaving?" I ask. "I will be leaving Monday, in 2 days." "I'll ask the kids about it tomorrow" "Okay, let me know what they say, are you sure you are okay honey? I can stay the night." She says. "I'll be okay, thank you Mrs Smith. For everything." "Of course honey, don't forget I love you, I'll always be here for you." She says getting up off the ground. "I love you too Mrs Smith, I'll let you know tomorrow." "Okay goodnight, bye sweetheart." "Bye Mrs Smith."
