Edmond puts his arm around my shoulder, guiding me to stand in front of Magnus and Gamma while the Ghost stands on Edmond's other side, slightly in front of us but not on the platform with Gamma and Magnus.
When the Ghost turns to face me and Edmond, I swallow.
The need to run and disappear right now is as strong as my need that first day Edmond brought me to the TAG classroom and announced I'd be a part of them. Now, he's bringing me to the Trinity, making me decide which of them I want to go with. I want to throw up.
I swallow again.
Edmond squeezes my shoulder then says, "Atan has made his decision and is prepared to announce it." Then, he steps away from me, leaving me standing in front of the three most powerful people in the Legacy Colony. Probably this whole planet.
Gripping my hands in front of me to keep them from shaking, I clear my throat and lift my chin. Then I close my eyes, thankful for probably the hundredth time this week that they can't see my face. And then I say, "I've chosen to go with the Ghost."
Gamma's welcoming smile wipes clean instantly, morphing into a sneer, complete with flaring nostrils. Magnus's smile fades, but he seems more resigned than upset. He inclines his head to me. "Thank you for considering our offers. Being a warrior is not for everyone."
He shoots a glance at the Ghost. "Though I hope you will consider working with us in the future in a less official manner."
The Ghost's hood dips in agreement.
Gamma's eyes oscillate between the two men and her eyes widen. "Did you two plan this ahead of time?" She throws the white napkin that had been resting on her lap at the food on the table and bolts to her feet. "How dare you!"
"They didn't—" I try to say, holding up a hand.
Edmond grips my shoulder and slowly backs me away from the three Trinity as Magnus turns on her and scowls. "I can't believe you just accused us of going behind your back! You're the only one of us who likes to do that. Don't project your crap onto us."
When we're several feet away from them, he turns me around and we stride out of the Receiving Room at a quick pace. Magnus and Gamma's voices carry beyond the doors as we head toward the spiraling corridor.
Once we're out of range, he slows his pace and leans closer to me. "Don't worry. This happens every time Gamma doesn't get something she really wants. She'll get over it soon enough and find some other shiny new object she desires. When they're done, Tradon will come to collect you."
"Collect me?" I say, giving Edmond a sidelong glance. The tangled nervous mess in my stomach hasn't lessened any, and I swallow to keep it down.
"Yes, son. You've made your decision. Tradon will officially announce you as his apprentice, then he will come collect you. From this point forward, you will live with him and learn to become the next Trinity Ghost."
I stare straight in front of me, dazed. "No more TAGs?"
Edmond shakes his head. "I'm sure something will be organized to help you catch up and learn the things you've missed, but that is at Tradon's discretion. From now on, you are under his care."
When we reach the top of the spiral, he clasps the top of my shoulder with his hand. Head on up to your room and get packed. I'll get you some food from Cook for your trip. Don't forget your tablet, and anything else you want to bring with you. You will not be coming back."
He gazes down at me, and our eyes lock. A slow smile crosses his mouth. "It has been an honor to work with you, Atan. I wish you the best, and hope you stay in touch."
This is it. I'm actually leaving. This will be the last time I sleep at the Monastery. Or see any of the other TAGs.
Once upon a time, I used to ghost the halls of the monastery. Now I'm training to become THE Ghost. Who knew all those years fending for myself and learning to be invisible would be a blessing and an asset?
Edmond squeezes my shoulder one more time, then we split off, each going in opposite directions. Him to get me some food for my trip. And me to pack for the last time.
