Alexander "Alex" and Charleston "Charlie" Chadwick stood by the front doors with two big collection tins, harassing everyone who passed by. The captain of the cheerleading squad, the valedictorian, and the prom queen, Lilith Van Hellscream, was attacked Halloween night and had yet to wake up. The two boys worshiped her, and as they were the biggest, meanest, scariest pair in the entire school, everyone else did too.
"Luke!" Alex screamed. "You've only contributed $5 to the cause. Do you not care?"
"Yo, Goth Girl, donate or die," Charlie growled.
Claire rolled her eyes at the ridiculous threat and marched right past them while Luke protested that he only had five dollars to spare.
"Oh, what?" Chad gasped. "Lilith still hasn't woken up?"
"No!" Alex huffed back, finally letting Luke go.
He sighed and put another $10 bill in their tin and said, "I hope she gets better soon."
"Yeah, that's right, you better... uh..." Charlie tried to bite back, but a stranger caught his eye.
Alex and Charlie could recognize everyone at the school. Claire was the girl with the choppy bangs and baggy black clothes, Chad was the guy who dressed like he was going to play golf sometime later in the afternoon if they wanted to join, and they identified everyone this way. Charlie remembered faces and Alex remembered names. Together, they remembered everyone. Everyone except this boy. Charlie would have remembered a boy with bleached blond hair. His bowtie seemed familiar along with his sweater vest and jeans, but he was sure he remembered the piercing on his left eyebrow and his strong jawline and high cheekbones that made him look like the protagonist of every romance book ever. He'd seen him somewhere before, and the deep dimples that boasted how happy he was to be there only taunted him.
"Good morning," the boy said cheerfully.
"Hey... you," Alex fumbled. He never remembered faces, but for some reason he always remembered names. "You haven't donated to helping Lilith wake up, have you?"
The boy's smile faltered, and he confessed, "no."
"Donate," Charlie growled, frustrated by how familiar yet foreign he felt.
"No thanks," he said, raising his hands up like he meant no harm and slipping right past them.
The twins stared at each other for a moment with identical expressions of shock. Everyone knew them and everyone feared them except for the boy with the bowtie.
