Chapter 13

We went into the water and started swimming towards the boat, John B and JJ got on first and I got on last. JJ stayed in front of my making sure to block me from any sudden gun shots we might be walking into. No one was here, it looked deserted.

"Maybe he left when he heard us coming?" I suggested, seeing as the boat was silent.

"Devils" I heard someone yell and looked to see Neville there holding a weapon and trying to hit the boys with it. John B and JJ set up a trip line, sending Neville to the ground so we could get him to listen to us. 

"We know Professor Sowell, we're friends okay? You were in Orinoco last year, with five other people right?"John B said to him. 

"How do you know that?" Neville asked, as JJ was trying to get him to drop the weapon.

"We're on the same team, home dog" JJ said to him.

"We don't want to hurt you, okay" I said from the back of the group by the door. 

"I was with Sowell yesterday, he didn't make it. You are the last one left, that's why we had to get to you before they did" John B said to a now calm Neville. "If we found you, they can too. Solana, you've been there?"

"That is a place of evil" 

"That stone piece right there, me and my dad found the thingy that goes in the centre" 

"Thingy? Really" I muttered from behind John B but only JJ heard me.

"The Gnomon" Neville said, making JJ lean to me and mutter "Gnomon?"

"There's some bad men who have taken my father to this place and they are going to kill him. I need your help to find this place, Neville"

"No, no no. The curse has already done enough" Neville went into panic mode. 

"I know it's dangerous but we need your help" I heard John B beg him. I was closest to the back of the boat and looking out at the completely silent lake, I swear I could hear a boat. 

"Hey Neville, how much traffic do you get on this river?" I asked walking into the boat cabin where the boys where.

"Nothing" Neville responded just as we heard gun fire. JJ pulled me down under him as shots were fired at the boat and men started yelling out to Neville. 

JJ went over and pulled the anchor so we could move the boat while I jumped into their boat and pulled their keys out and threw them into the water. Neville started to fight one of them men that showed up. JJ pulled the mans shirt back making him land in the water and then a cut the tie with the machete and drove away. 

"You owe me an anchor" Neville said as we escaped.

"You're welcome" JJ said sarcastically. 

John B and I sat with Neville again, trying to get him to help us after we just proved we were on the same team. 

"Neville, they're taking our father there. You are the only person who knows where it is" John B pleaded.

"Neville, they are going to kill him unless you help us" I tried to give him my puppy dog eyes, the ones that JJ falls for every time. I heard him laugh knowing what I was doing.

"If they are going after the gold, then they will die anyway. Unless they can pass the test, which they won't if they can't translate the idol. You know the story, right?" Neville asked, I didn't, but I assumed John B did.

"El Dorado was found by a Guajiro king, and when it came time for him to slip his mortal coil and meet my greats on the astral plane, he wasn't just going to give the gold to his sons. It was the source of his power. It had to go to the wisest man, and to ensure this actually happened, he set up the test of the gnomon" Neville explained.
