In the quiet hours before dawn, Cassie's eyes fluttered open, her chest heaving with the gripping fear of another nightmare. Once again, she found herself trapped in that same recurring dream, a haunting echo of past traumas that refused to release its hold on her mind.
Beside her, Connor stirred, sensing her distress even in his sleep. As she shifted restlessly against the sheets, he roused from his slumber, his hand finding hers in the darkness. With a soft murmur of concern, he brushed a gentle kiss against her cheek, his touch calming against the lingering tendrils of fear that still clung to her.
"Cassie, what's wrong?" Connor's voice was laced with concern as he pulled her closer, his arms enveloping her in a comforting embrace. He could feel the tension radiating from her body, the tremors that shook her frame as she struggled to shake off her nightmare.
"It's nothing," Cassie whispered as she nestled against him, seeking his warmth. But even as she spoke the words, she knew they were a lie. The images from her dream still flickered in her mind, vivid and unsettling, refusing to fade.
Connor brushed a strand of hair from her face, his touch gentle against her skin. "You know you can tell me anything, right?" he said softly, his eyes searching hers.
With a heavy sigh, Cassie nodded, the weight of her fears pressing down upon her like a suffocating blanket. "It's just... the same dream, over and over again," she confessed, her voice thick with emotion. "It doesn't go away."
Connor's expression softened with understanding as he pulled her closer, his arms a comforting anchor in the storm of her fears. "Hey, it's okay," he whispered, his breath warm against her ear. "I'm here for you, always. We'll get through this together, just like we always do."
With Connor's steady presence beside her, Cassie felt a glimmer of hope begin to stir within her heart. As the first light of dawn began to filter through the curtains, Cassie closed her eyes, allowing herself to be drenched in the warmth of Connor's embrace.
The streets were a chaotic mess, a swirling maelstrom of panic and desperation as the outbreak swept through the heart of Portsmouth. Cassie's heart hammered in her chest as she clung to the backseat of the car, her fingers white-knuckled around the door handle. In front of her, Joan sat rigid in the passenger's seat, her eyes fixed on the road ahead, her brow furrowed with worry.
"Mom!" Cassie's voice was a panicked whisper as she reached out for her mother, her fingers grazing the sleeve of Joan's jacket. But Joan's attention was elsewhere, her focus consumed by the chaos unfolding outside the car window.
The streets were a blur of flashing lights and blaring sirens as police cars and ambulances raced past, their horns blaring in a frantic symphony of urgency. People ran in every direction, their faces twisted with fear as they fled from some unseen terror that lurked in the shadows.
Suddenly, a loud thud echoed through the car as an infected slammed into the back window, its blood-smeared face contorted in a grotesque look. Cassie recoiled in horror, she pressed herself against the door, willing herself to disappear into the seat.
Ryan cursed under his breath as he swerved the car to avoid a group of panicked pedestrians, his knuckles beating against the steering wheel. "Hold on tight, Cassie!" he shouted over the chaos, his voice barely audible above the screams and sirens.
But even as the car lurched forward, Cassie couldn't tear her eyes away from the infected that pounded against the glass, its bloodshot eyes boring into hers with a chilling intensity. In that moment, she felt a surge of terror unlike anything she had ever known, a primal instinct that screamed at her to run, to flee from the nightmare that had consumed their world. And then she opened her eyes to Connor's voice calling her name.
