Dressed in her faded hello kitty pajamas, with her black facial mask on, Bee sat in the living room, chuckling at her phone.
Something with work.
Something with work her ass. She could tell Susan was being evasive on purpose. But there was no need to hound her over the phone when the gist would be much better served in person.
"What are you smiling at?." Her mother asked, joining her in the living room.
"Nothing. I thought you'd gone to bed."
"Not quite yet. Have you heard from Susan?"
"Yeah. She texted me a while ago. She ll be home late, if at-all." Bee added, chuckling again.
"Oh. Why is that funny ?"
"Nothing, jesus, mom mind your business."
"She is my business as much as you re mine. Is she okay?."
"Yes. She is probably tied up with work, but if it makes you feel assured, she is with Numi."
"Okay. That's good then. That's good. I'm happy you are here, i have not seen you since we had dinner at Denis's. I like his parents."
"Yeah. Me too. When I first met them, i could totally understand why Denis is the way he is. Full of love and warmth. It's what he grew up around."
"And money. He grew up around a lot of money too. How come you failed to mention how loaded they are?"
Bee shrugged. "I didn't think it was important."
Hanna snorted. "Money is always important Bee. Its the best security one could have. At least now i know you re in good hands."
Bee frowned a little at her mother. "You didn't think i was in good hands before?"
"I just want the best for you baby. Did it give me a lot more joy and satisfaction to know that Denis is rich? Of course it did. And it's nothing to be ashamed of. Because it makes me very happy that your life will be different and a lot more better than mine."
"Mom, there is nothing wrong with the life you have lived. That we have lived. I wouldn't have asked for a much better one."
"Well, i would okay? Because we deserve so much better. I deserve a man that would have stayed to raise his child and look after the mother of that child. A man that would have been proud to have us as a family. And you deserve a proper father. Not a coward. So don't you dare say this is enough for you."
She'd always known her mother had taken the absence of her father really hard but she'd also thought she'd gotten over the pain and anger. She rarely talked about him and whenever she did, it was without feeling.
She stood up and went to sit beside her mother. "Yes, yes we do deserve better. But don't you think we already got better? Instead of a deadbeat father, we got Susan, Martha and Mr Patrick. I went to the best schools, had opportunities handed to me because people thought i was Mr. Patrick's biological daughter. I also got a sister Mom, one who accepted me and shared her father with me wholeheartedly. We also got an inheritance we know nothing about, from people who aren't even our bloodline. That to me, is a much more bigger and truer love. We got a real family Mom. Its a blessing truly."
Hanna took a deep breath and let out a long sigh. "You re right. Of course you re right. I don't mean to sound ungrateful. Because i am and i will aways be. It's just, sometimes, it's hard, you know? When I remember him, it's hard. I am happy you have Denis."
"So am i." She said, leaning in to kiss her mother's forehead. "And you will always have me, always."
"I love you so much. More than anything in the world." Hanna kissed her daughter's hand. "Alright, i am going to bed now. You sure Susan sounded okay when she called? Its quite late."
