ELEVEN YEARS AGO...

Monday, 15th of July, 10:31 AM. Kindergarten Playground.

Mikumo was crouched on the ground, knees to his chest as he struggled to keep his hair out of his face. He absentmindedly drew shapes in the sand with a stick, shaking off the feeling that someone was watching him.

And unfortunately, he knew exactly who it was.

"Yami!" A painfully cheerful voice said, smiling brightly as he came into view. Mikumo looked up at the energetic ash-blonde, the same one that would always sit and play with him, or even share his lunch with him, holding his hands behind his back.

Mikumo always wondered why he even bothered. He never spoke, he was boring, and he never played with any of the other kids. Well, it was more like the other kids never played with him, but you get the point.

"It's me! Gogo! Do you remember me? I played with you yesterday! N'the day before that, n'the day before that, n'the day before that, n'the day-"

Yes, he unfortunately did remember him. Afterall, it wasn't exactly easy to forget the person who says that exact same thing. Every. Single. Day.

Mikumo wished he could tell the blonde to "Go-go away-way", but his momm- no, mother told him that if he kept speaking, she would rip out his tongue. That, and he really just didn't have that much to say.

So, he decided the best option was to just be quiet.

"-n'the day before that! Anyways, I heard it was your birthday today, so happy birthday, Yami!" He then scooped Mikumo into a hug, holding him so tight that he thought he might explode right then and there.

"Oh!" He then let go of Mikumo, in which he couldn't help but miss the warmth that the blonde provided.

"My daddy said that on birthdays, we give the people we like a lot presents, cuz' it shows we appreciate and care about them n'stuff!"

"N'then my mommy said just to not get them anything shitty... I don't know what that word means, but daddy told me not to say that anymore."

"Soo, they helped me pick out this for you!"

He then pulled his hands back infront of him, revealing a small, white, stuffed toy. It resembled a white cat, one with a yellow nose and no mouth, wearing a set of blue overalls, a yellow shirt underneath, and a red bow on its right ear.

"Ta-da! Well? What do you think? Do you like it? Do you love it?"

Mikumo simply stared curiously at the stuffed toy, the soft fabric wrapping around his small hands.

He didn't know what to think at the time, but he was mainly confused at the gesture. His mother always told him that his birthday was just a reminder of one of the worst mistakes and days of her life, and it wasn't something they should be celebrating.

So, why? Why did he seem so happy about his birthday? Why did he even care?

But even with Mikumo's confusion, he couldn't help but feel something else. A warm, cozy feeling in his chest began to rise, and his heart couldn't help but flutter.

All he could do was simply stare fondly at the boy infront of him, thinking about how much he wanted to say to him.

He wasn't sure how to register those feelings inside of him, or what to do with him. He didn't what to do about it.

So, he did the only thing he did know.

He stood up from his space on the sand, carefully placing his gift on the ground, and stepping towards the cheery blonde infront of him before doing something even he didn't expect to do.
