Chapter 14

Kairav frowned at his laptop, clicking away at the laptop angrily. All of a sudden the laptop screen was forced shut, barely extracting his fingers in time to see a pissed off Mimi behind the screens.

"Mimi yeh aap kya kar rahi hain?"

"Yeh kaisi zidd hain jo apni behen ko darwaze thak dekhkar nahi aa paye tum?! Bechari aakri minute thak ghar ke andar jhak thi rahi thaaki tum aake ek baar usse keh do ki 'Akshu jaldi vapas ghar aana.' Lekin tumse toh voh bhi nahi hua." 

Kairav rolled his eyes and opened his laptop again. Karthik, Kirti and Manish had already given him their lectures, trying to persuade him to come downstairs for Akshara's send off. 

"Mujhe office ke liye der ho rahi hain." Kairav gathered his things and left Mimi in his room.

Mimi sighed, looking up, praying to whichever god that would listen. "Hamare bacchon ko saath la dijiye please."

Kairav hurried down the stairs pausing mid way to find Naira looking at him, disappointed. He swallowed the guilt that had wedged itself in his throat and glanced away, trying to walk past his mother, her words making him stop in his tracks.

"Toh yeh hain tumhara rakhi nibhane ka tarika?" 

"Usse rakhi bandvake mujhe che saal hogaye hain Mumma." 

Naira came down a couple of steps to him and held out an envelope. "Yeh Akshu tumhare liye chod gayi thi. Lekin khud tumhe dene ki himmat nahi kar payi. Rakhi bhej toh nahi paati thi lekin iska matlab yeh nahi ki ussne tumhare liye rakhi banaye nahi. Lo, tumhari che saalon ki rakhi jo ek chitti mein band reh gaye the."

Naira watched as Kairav trailed his fingers over the handmade rakhis. "Jab mein Rishikesh mein ashram mein rehthi thi, tab main bhi tumhare Mamu ke liye rakhi banakar rakhthi thi, lekin khabhi bhejne ki himmat nahi juta payi."

"Aapki aur Akshu ke halat alag the. Aapko laga aap par police case hain."

"Maanti hoon. Lekin mein police case ke vajah se nahi bhagi thi. Iss baat ke vajah se bhaaghi thi ki Nani ko mujh par trust nahi tha. Akshu par bhi Birlas ne trust nahi kiya tha, isiliye woh chali gayi."

"Lekin--"

"Nahi Kairav! Zindagi mein kuch aise mod aate hain jo sab kuch hila deta hain. Khud ke usoolo ko bhi. Akshu bhaagi nahi thi Kairav. Khud ko vapas dundhne ke liye gayi thi. Aur itne saalon ke baad jab mein dekh sakthi hoon ki woh kis tarah se badi hogayi hain, main jaanti hoon, Akshu ko khud mil gayi."

And with that Naira left Kairav alone with his thoughts, holding the rakhis in his hand throughout the car ride to the office.

"What the hell! Maine kahan tha na ki aaj ke din, everything should be perfect! Fix it now dammit!" Kairav yelled at the intern who was sobbing.
