I stand in line clutching my 16 year old twin sisters hand for dear life hoping with all my might we won't be reaped.
We already finished standing in line to get our finger picked to check if it's really us. But like who else would it be? A robot pretending to be us?
"Welcome to the 75th hunger games!" Flora yells into the microphone the sound echoing. "We don't have much time so we must get going!"
Alex's hand goes slack. I give it a small squeeze. "We got this" I whisper she nods.
Flora walks over to the female bowl. "Now for the girls!" She grins. Her perfectly manicured hand reaching for a slip. Once she grabs one she takes her hand out and reads it. "Alexandrea Pinesmith!"
Now my hand goes slack. I look over at Alex. Her face is as pale as paper. She tries to take a step forward but I stop her.
"What are you doing Charlie?" She whispers.
"What I promised I would do." I whisper back. I take a deep breath then walk forward.
"Ma'am what are you doing?" A peacekeeper asks.
"I volunteer as tribute" I say willing my voice not to shake the sound echoing off the walls. Whispers start.
"Well then. Come up!" Flora yells her rainbow chin length hair shaking. I slowly walk up the steps. "What's your name?"
"Charlie-Rae" I say looking directly at Alex. Her face is still pale she's shaking her head sadly.
"Well then Charlie are you ready to meet your partner?" She asks.
I nod my head as she walks over and reaches into the bowl again.
"BENJAMIN SMITH!" She yells.
I suck in a breath. I know him. He is a year older than me. He walks up.
"Our tributes of district 12!" She yells as peacekeepers lead us off into the justice building.
"Your family's may come visit you." A peacekeeper says shoving us each into a different room.
After awhile Alex comes in carrying Riley our six year old sister. They run over and give me a hug.
"You're so stupid" Alex whispers to me.
"I know. But I couldn't let you die" I tell her pulling back from the hug to look at her. She looks like me, dove grey eyes, wavy brown hair, olive skin she has more freckles than me though.
"What's going on?" Riley asks hugging me tight.
"You may not see me for awhile" I tell her.
"Your going to the Hungry games aren't you?" She asks pulling back from the hug her small grey eyes full of wisdom and sadness.
"Yes" I smile sadly.
"Oh. Will you come back?" She looks down. I pick her up then look at Alex.
"Hopefully" I tell her.
"Will you try?"
"Yes. I promise" I tell her then turn to Alex "There is some food in the barn under the dead grass. It will last you awhile." I tell her. "How many times did you put your name in?"
12 because you told me you were putting yours in 44" She gives me another hug. I sigh. Of course she didn't listen. She would only listen to mum. But she's dead now.. And dad... Also gone..
I set my anger aside and turn to Alex "There is some food in the barn under the dead grass. It will last you awhile."
"Ok"
"Theres also some money in the white vase. The one with pink flowers."
"The one mom made?"
"Yeah" I tell her. Riley comes over and we all stay in a tight hug.
Soon after a peacekeeper comes. "Times up"
"I love you!" I call to them.
"I love you too!" Alex yells.
"Nooo!" Ryley yells not letting go of me.
"Riley you have to go" I tell her swalloing a sob.
A peacekeeper picks her up. "Time to go" I couldn't tell for sure but it sounded like he was crying too.
"I love you!" I tell them again.
"I love you too!" Riley sobs.
"I will come back!" I tell them as the door closes. I sit down on the grey sofa willing myself not to cry.
No one else comes to visit..
