Chapter 1: I don't lie

Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep

It's Monday morning and I'm so rudely woken up by the sound of my morning alarm screeching from my phone.
I lift my head from my pillow. Drool on my cheeks and squinting my eyes, I scan my room in a poor attempt to find the source of the noise now loudly drilling the silence that once filled my room.
"Ughhh... Where are you, you little demon?" I growl, still half asleep. My morning voice is enough to scare away any demons lurking nearby.
I fling the covers off my body to the side of my bed and reach for my glasses on the nightstand.
Just as I do, I hear a

Thump!

I jump in surprise and quickly put my glasses on.
I scurry off my bed, into my slippers and round to the other side where my alarm is still loudly blaring from my phone.
Eager to shut it up, I reach down to pick the phone up before noticing the cracks on my screen.
"Aarrggghhh! No no no no no!" I screech as I pick it up.
"Please don't do this to me, I just got you..." I say looking at the wreckage of my brand new phone.
"Guess this is what I get for being too lazy to put a screen protector on."
I press snooze on the alarm and sigh into the now silent air that fills my room.
I had spent the entire summer holiday working at my local McRonalds to buy a new phone. I used up all my *very little* savings along with the money from my part time job to get a new phone because I was tired and slightly embarrassed of using my older sister's ancient hand me down.
I'm still stood in the same position, cracked phone in hand when I hear a voice say
"So are you planning on turning it off anytime soon?"
It was my sister Carla stood in front of my now wide open bedroom door.
"What?" I reply confused
"Your alarm" she sighs, rolling her eyes.

Beep beep beep

"Oh.... Right!" I push the stop button.
I didn't realise I had been spacing out for the past 10 minutes.
"You know if you're going to wake up the whole house with your alarm every morning, at least have some breakfast waiting for us!" She scoffs.
"I have school and you have hands so make your breakfast yourself Carla."
"Also, what is on your face?" I ask starring at her in both concern and curiosity.
"It's called a mud mask, Mia" she snaps.
"I'm sorry, you put mud... on your face? ...Willingly?" I ask in shock.
"Actually, It's very beneficial for your skin dummy!" She says "It reduces acne and signs of ageing, clears blemishes, smoothens and tightens your skin, shrinks the pores, adds a natural glow to your face....."
Uninterested, I stare down back at my phone
"Shite!" I yell
"What?" Carla yells back startled.
"I'm going to be late for school!" I reply scrambling across my room to get to the bathroom.
"So what?" She says "you're always late for school."
"Uh... no, I WAS, past tense, WAS always late for school, this year I'm not going to let that happen." I proclaim pushing past her and into the hallway.
"Well you're off to a good start" she adds sarcastically.
I shut the door to the bathroom behind me as I enter.
I frantically brush my teeth, shower and speed walk across the hallway back to my room to get dressed.
5 minutes pass and I'm fully clothed for school. I take one last look in my mirror, questioning the state of my hair, grab my backpack and fling it onto my back. Grabbing my phone, I speed out of the front door and to the bus stop.
I take a seat on the cold metal bench, patiently waiting for the bus when I hear a

Ping!

I look down at the screen.

1 new message from Sophie

'Mia... you said you would stop being late!! Where are you?? :('
'Hehe sorry... I'll be at school soon soph, promise it won't happen again.' I respond

Ping!

'It's okay, I forgive you but Ice cream after school is on you!'
'Aye Aye Captain!' I send just as the bus approaches the stop. I hold my arm out to signal it and get on.
