10 Hours Remaining:
The morning crept into view as you slowly sipped your coffee. You sighed and propped your feet up on the table to peer at the golden waves pushing the stars out of the horizon. You had to pick up and move again soon, but the moment felt too good to not bask in just a little longer. It had been years since you felt the cool morning breeze on your skin. It rose goosebumps on your bare legs, but you had never felt more alive. The watch on your left wrist clicked, indicating your need to move. With a huff, you took one last look at the beautiful sky before you left the terrace.
A strange calm had washed over you through the panic of last night. After finishing your breakfast you felt a wild rush take over. You had very little time to cover your tracks and paranoia was not a friend in these cases.
Your hotel room was eerily quiet, but you were thankful. Every noise surrounding this safe space was essential for your ears to pick up just in case. Feeling your hair, you were surprised that it had dried just enough to brush through it quickly. You riffled through your backpack until you found a simple long sleeve shirt and pants. You needed to draw the least amount of attention possible. In a world where you could trust no one, everyone was suspect. So, you needed to be invisible.
Gathering all your belongings into your backpack, you looked at the beautiful room one last time before taking your leave. You threw your hood on and took the stairs. Elevators could not be trusted when it came to speed; stairs were always fast and reliable.
Returning the room key to the front desk you went out of the back doors. The pool area was tarped due to the cold weather, but you could see the vapor rise from the pit where the chilling wind met the moist air around it. A sadness washed over you. You missed swimming in a hotel and being normal. Nothing felt normal with him in your life. That's why you needed this win. This is the best you had done thus far and you refused to fail again. You just hoped time was on your side.
9 Hours Remaining:
Your brain moved a mile a minute going over every tactic you picked up from every failed game. Staying off Main Street and quickly finding a way out of the city was ideal. The only problem was you didn't have enough money for a taxi or a bus to take you that far. Despite all of your efforts, you were still in the middle of town; it would take all of your cash to even get you part of the way.
Damn Rei and his stupid game!
It didn't matter. This time was different. You had practice after all, and after every failed game you got further and further to victory. Each time you played your time got better and better! If you hid he would find you, but making it out of the city in time ensured a win. Too bad he made sure that would not be a possibility. He had always given you the same amount of money each game with the same backpack that you could fill with whatever you needed to live for a day or days if you won. The game had a 24-hour limit. There was no way you would make it out of town with this small amount of cash, so you opted to go with a chase. If he couldn't catch you then you could just let the timer run out.
You checked (for the millionth time) the plain black watch that was given to you for the game. You knew it didn't have a tracker in it. As much as Rei liked to win he hated cheating of any magnitude. If only he felt so strongly about letting you live a normal life without him in it.
You decided to stop at a convenience store for a cheap late breakfast. Running on an empty stomach would do you no good. You decided on a quick ramen dish and water. Eating quickly, you eyed your watch while the seconds ticked on.
8 Hours Remaining:
This was good. You have surpassed your record from the last game. All you needed was 8 more hours!
