"I've always had the desire to inflict pain on others and to have others inflict pain on me. I always seemed to enjoy everything that hurt. The desire to inflict pain, that is all that is uppermost."

—Albert Fish (AKA The Brooklyn Vampire/The Werewolf of Wysteria)

"Kit, I already gave you my answer a million times. The answer is still no." You hunched over a table, damp rag in hand, swiping along the surface to clean up for the next round of customers. The fringe of your bangs brushed over your face at your hunched posture, poorly hiding your irked facial expression from your friend.

You were sick and tired of hearing about the Halloween party from Katie. You already told Katie that you were not able to attend because of work. Then, lo and behold, Katie shows up for another round of begging you to come with her. Apparently, there was a guy Katie had met while heading to one of her Psych classes and he was just too cute to pass up the opportunity to see him in an informal setting. Katie did this sort of thing often since she was the more outgoing of the two of you, but never about a guy before so the request was a little out of character.

You didn't mind going the the party, but one of your coworkers had called in sick, and your manager said she would pay you overtime for the full time you worked the coworkers shift. That was a hard deal to pass up, so you took the opportunity. You would be getting out at ten, and the party started at midnight. However, you would have to attended class early the next morning with work directly after. This schedule left you with barely any free time.

Kit did not seem to be budging at all. Whoever this guy was, he must have really made an impression on her for Kit to want to meet for a date. Kit never found much interest in guys from the school you both went to, but that usually didn't stop them from hitting on her. It was always a swing and a miss until today, of all days.

"Look," Kit started and she knew this wasn't gonna end well simply judging by her tone. When her voice as hard as it was, you knew she was serious about her request. "I know it's not your thing, but this guy...." She looked away smiling with a blush from her seat in the booth you had previously finished cleaning. "This guy is so different from the other ones on campus."

"How could you possibly know that?" You looked into her infuriating eyes to see them sparkling. That pulled you up short and you froze for a moment. "Damn, you really like this guy, huh?" You groaned. "Kitty, You barely know him, for all you know he doesn't even go to our school. He could be an axe murderer and you'd say 'I can fix him' or some crap like that." You giggled at her irked expression.

With a chime of the bell, the doors opened to another wave of customers. As fun as it was talking to Kit, you needed to get back to work before the manager noticed you were talking instead paying attention to the customers.

"Look, Kit, I have to go. I'm kinda busy. I'll see what I can do for tonight, but I won't make any promises." You sighed at your words. You didn't want to give in so easily, but you also knew you could not, in good conscience, let your friend go to a party all by her lonesome to meet some guy she only met once in passing. You knew you would be tired, however, it was a small price to pay for your piece of mind. If you let Kit go alone you would just be up all night calling Kit to make sure she was okay only for her not to answer out of spite. Sure, it never happened before because you always ended up caving to Kits demands, but you knew your friend dynamic too well for it to be untrue. You knew Kit was going to attended the party even if you said you wouldn't attend. At least with this you could keep an eye on her and the mystery guy.

Kit knew that a maybe with you always meant yes, so she smiled at your words. Sliding out of the booth she quickly hugged you and smiled before turning for the door.
