The new year has almost started, and it is nine months after the fire. I'm still getting used to living without Yetta. The place feels so empty without her and her fighting spirit... But I still have Jane! Every night, even without Yetta, we are still reading. Sometimes, I pretend she's sitting with us, reading along... Normally, I'd be worried about being late to work, seeing as it's a Tuesday, but Jane told me that the factory owners are on trial today. She told me it means they are being charged for their crimes against us workers! I'm very happy about it, and the extra day off. I walk out of the bedroom and into the main room and see Jane sitting down in one of the three old rickety chairs by the table. The word "three" lingers in my mind, for I don't know how long, as I think of the third amiga in our group. I space and dwell on it until Jane snaps me back to reality with a gentle "Hello?" I look around, startled from her voice. I notice her again now, holding what looks to be an old Italian children's book. "Buongiorno, Jane! What are you reading there?" I swiftly moved behind her and leaned over, looking at what she's reading. To my surprise, she's actually reading a kids' book. I assumed it would be hiding a really complex book, and she was just holding up the other to not make me feel bad or confused. "Oh.." She speaks softly. "Just a book I found at a small shop. Don't worry! It didn't cost much, I know I should have spent the extra money on another book when we already have one, but it was quite cheap, and-" I cut off her rambling and try to calm her. "Oh, Jane, per favore calmati! I don't mind you getting something extra sometimes." I can see her calm down a bit. "But why buy a book for small children? And in Italian, no less? Your reading is so advanced. Why wouldn't you get yourself a nicer book?" I tilt my head, puzzled. "W-well," She clears her throat. "I just thought, I spend so much time reading English, but I hardly know any Italian, and after spending so long practicing it back at my home-" her voice catches in her throat and she rethinks her words. "My old home, I still hardly know any of it... So I thought I'd get something to practice with."
I stare at her in surprise and awe. I had no idea she still had the motivation, especially after the fire, to keep trying and learning new things. I've barely had the motivation to eat every day, let alone learn a new language. "Wow, Jane... That's really impressive..." But she doesn't respond. She's already hidden in her book again with a faint blush across her face from the compliment. I sigh and turn back to the bedroom, changing out of my new sleeping clothes and into a dress. It would be a nice day for a walk.
