I wake up early in the morning, as usual, and walk over out of the bedroom. I'm not sure exactly what time it is, but I know the sun is not up yet. I grab the household coat and a hat and head out to work. I have worked at a new factory now since the fire, but I do the same things. I sew, and I sew, and I sew, and every time I go to work, all I can think about is the fire. I work slowly every day in fear of the place becoming yet another inferno. No matter how many months pass, I don't think I'll ever be comfortable working in the factory. And of course, I'm very grateful for Jane working too. I don't know what I would do without her. She still works as a governess for the Blancks. I can only imagine how hard that must be for her, I know I could never do it. If I saw the faces of those men again, I don't know what I'd do, but I already know how unpleasant jail is from the strikes, and I don't want to go back.
I arrive at the factory and slip inside, taking off my coat and hat and go up the stairs. After the fire, I've decided never to go up an elevator again, for if a fire broke out, I'd be much safer on the stairs. I find my way to my seat by a machine and wait for the day to start.
