"You may enter, child." The booming voice came back. It shook Lonnalie out of his mouth gaping trance. The place was so clean. It wasn't just clean, it was terribly spotless. Holy moly.
But, he did as told. He stepped past the door and made sure to close it behind himself.
"Step forward." The voice was there again. The boy found himself walking up to a white throne. One more so for show than comfortability. Gabriel stood beside the chair. Eyes rolling as far as Lonnalie could see. It almost made him giggle. But he kept his composure. Wanting to make the best first impression with God.
"State your name, child." God said. Lonnalie cleared his throat.
"Uhh I'm Lonnalie."
"Hmm." Came the voice. "Lonnalie." He let the word roll off his tongue. Then he sat forward, into the light. Lonnalie was taken aback with how normal the man looked. I mean, he glowed brighter than the Angels, but he could easily blend in and get around.
"Yes."
The man beckoned him forward. Lonnalie did as told. God opened his hands and the man placed his atop the elder's. "It is so very good to meet you." He felt God squeeze his hands. He gulped. "And you, aswell." He replied quietly. God laughed, glancing back at his son. "Meek little thing, isn't he ?" Gabriel frowned. "Dad. Leave the kid alone, will you ?" Lonnalie's frown reformed. He smacked his lips. "You're right. He kind of does sound like a twink." He had no idea what he was saying, but it slipped out before he could stop himself.
God turned his head to the boy, eyes searching for how he meant to say what he said. Lonnalie shrunk with a small whimper. "Mmh"
"A what ?" He questioned. Gabriel snorted. "Sorry! That one was my fault." His hand rose and he spoke as if he didn't care. And he really didn't.
God's nose crinkled and he laughed. "My, I do admire your honesty." Lonnalie shifted in his spot. Feeling out of place. Oh dear.
When God let go of his hands, he placently wiped them off and shoved them into his pockets. Get it together, Lee. It's just God. Psssh! You've got this.
"I've heard through the," God's hand rolled at the wrist while he searched for the word. A lightbulb seemed to go off above his head and he snapped his fingers. "The grapevine, yes! That you've had some of our angels bothering you. Hitting you. And upsetting you, is that correct ?" He questioned the youngling. Lonnie gulped. "Yeah, a bit. But I swear they weren't a big --" God put a hand up toward him. His mouth clamped shut. His Eminence gestured a guard to a door to the right of Lonnie and his head turned when he heard commotion. His eyes widened. The angels who'd been "bothering" him were drug into the grand room.
When they saw the one and only, they piped down. "Your Grace," One of them started. The other two knelt down. "It is truly an honour that we've been gifted with your presence." The girl spoke cunningly. God rolled his eyes in sync with Lonnie. They gave each other a look, then a smile.
"Yes, yes. Get up, get off the floor." He ushered them and they stood. Hands in front of them, cuffed. "It has come to my attention that you've been hurting my precious gem." He motioned to Lonnalie and the angel's faces turned grim.
Then it clicked.
He was the so called 'gem'.
"Oh, my Lord." One of them whispered out. Another stepped forward. "If I may, Your Grace?" God waved him to go on. "We did not know that he was a special piece to you, nor did we really intend anything harmful against him."
"That's right! It was simple play, we were only teasing h --"
"His bruises say otherwise!" God stood, now furious. His hands balled into fists. Lonnalie shrunk back. The man took notice. He cleared his throat. And loosened his stance. His hands folded together against his abdomen.
"He was badly hurt when Gabriel told me about him the first time, and a few times before that. I've heard him pray to me that you'll all stop. He is hurting. And you are all leaning toward the way of sin for punishing a harmless Cupid." Lonnie flinched. He wasn't harmless. He could hold his own. He just wanted to protect those foolish angels. From himself.
"He isn't just a Cupid, Your Grace. He's --"
"He's crazy!"
"No, he's a monster." Another growled.
"Enough!" God hollered, his voice booming off the granite walls. "Not another word." He brushed off his robe and carefully stepped closer to the three angels. His guards still held them. He glanced at each of them.
"For your mouth," He tapped the first one's chin. "For your dishonour toward another angelic being's life," He continued with a flick to the forehead for the second child.
"And for your sins," He sneered into the third's face. The one who'd called Lonnalie a monster.
"You are all being punished to the highest degree." He finalized. Their faces paled.
"But, Your Grace!" One cut in. Struggling against a guard. The man in question gave the kid a grimace. He was tired of their cut ins.
"Not our wings!" The second yelped.
"Please, we will make this right." The third added on. He was sweating now. Lonnie almost giggled. He wasn't grinning or amused but this was new. They all looked like him. Terrified for their lives.
"You will continue to walk through Heaven and fulfill your duties with shame. Your wings are getting clipped. And that's final." He spoke clearly, making sure they all heard.
"No!" One of them screamed.
"Not another word!" God screamed over the boy. He cowered and sank his head to his chest.
"Take them away, Gil. They're upsetting me." Gil was the guard who'd made a face earlier. He nodded and drug the kids out of the room. Lonnalie could hear their screams fade as the door closed.
God clapped his hands together. "Now then," He gestured Lonnie to come closer as he sat back down. "Yes ?" He boy squeaked out. It made the man laugh. "Don't be scared, child! I was only doing my duty." Lonnie hadn't realized he, himself, was covered in sweat. "I know, but it was a bit harsh. Was it not ?"
"Harsh is the price they have to pay for their inconsiderations. I understand it might've unnerved you but they'll be fine." The boy wasn't so sure. "Gabriel, be a dear and get him something to drink. He looks dehydrated. Are you alright, Lonnalie ?" He nodded in reply. "I'm quite fine."
Gabriel snapped his fingers and a drink was in Lonnie's hand. His eyes popped open wider and he gulped. "How ?" He murmured. "My dad's god. I'm one of the first angels. It comes with its perks."
His Eminence stood again and smiled at Lonnie, a twinkle of mischeviousness in his gaze. The boy quirked an eyebrow and let God guide him out onto a balcony. Gabriel followed, along with three guards.
"Now child, I want you to never be afraid of anymore angels because of their nonsense. Yes, angels can be a handful at times but most of them mean well. Take Gabriel for example," He motioned to his child. Gabriel scratched at his stubble. "Gee, thanks?" He queried. God laughed heartily. "He's almost completely harmless, you know? But it is still okay to be cautious." God turned his head to Lonnalie. He was listening but had his back to the man. Staring out over the clouds.
"Sometimes you might find yourself in a situation where you're too close to the edge." He stepped toward the oblivious boy, who just kept on nodding. He thought it was a metaphor. Gabriel caught on to his father's notion and tried scrambling forward. His face stricken with horror. The guards trapped him in their hold with ease. Fuck, he had to think.
"No. Father, No! Kid look out!" He screamed. Lonnie whipped his head around just as God shoved him backwards. His feet slipped and he took to the sky. Falling between the clouds. The air rushing past him was much too loud and he clamped his hands over his ears. "Lonnalie!" He heard Gabriel scream again.
No.
