Ryder's eyes narrowed as he watched Lucas's fists fly towards the punching bag, each strike landing with precision and power. They were supposed to be working out together, but Lucas's focus was elsewhere. Ryder could sense it.
"What's eating at you, Lucas?" Ryder asked, his voice low and even, as he landed a series of swift kicks on the bag.
Lucas paused, his chest heaving, and turned to face Ryder. For a moment, their eyes locked in a silent understanding, like two soldiers sharing a secret language.
"I need to tell you something," Lucas said, his voice barely above a whisper, as he wiped the sweat from his brow.
Ryder's instincts kicked in. He knew that tone, that look. It was the same one Lucas had worn when they'd first met, when they'd made a pact to trust each other with their lives.
"What is it?" Ryder pressed, his grip on the bag tightening, as if preparing for a blow.
Lucas hesitated, his eyes darting around the gym, ensuring they were alone. Then, in a swift motion, he pulled Ryder into a quiet corner, away from prying eyes and ears.
"It's about Sophia," Lucas said, his voice dropping to a whisper.
Ryder's gaze snapped to attention, his mind racing with possibilities. What about Sophia? Had something happened? Was she in danger?
"Tell me," Ryder demanded, his voice firm, as he crossed his arms, ready for the truth.
Lucas's eyes locked onto Ryder's, his gaze intense. "I've been spending a lot of time with Sophia, Ryder. We've grown close. Really close."
Ryder's expression remained neutral, but his eyes narrowed slightly. "What are you saying, Lucas?"
Lucas hesitated, his voice barely above a whisper. "I think I might be falling for her, Ryder. Hard."
Ryder's gaze didn't waver. "And?"
Lucas's shoulders tensed. "And I don't know when to tell her. I don't want to ruin our friendship, but I can't keep it inside anymore."
Ryder's expression softened slightly, his voice taking on a gentle tone. "You're scared, Lucas. I get it. But you can't keep this bottled up. You need to be honest with her."
Lucas nodded, his eyes dropping to the floor. "I know. But what if she doesn't feel the same way? What if it changes everything between us?"
Ryder placed a hand on Lucas's shoulder, his grip firm. "You won't know unless you try, brother. And even if it doesn't work out, Sophia's not the kind to let it come between your friendship. She's stronger than that."
Lucas's gaze lifted, searching Ryder's face for reassurance. "You really think so?"
Ryder nodded. "I do. Now, stop being a coward and tell her how you feel."
Lucas's lips curled into a small smile, a hint of determination sparking in his eyes. "You know what? You're right. It's time I stopped being a coward."
Ryder's expression turned thoughtful. "You know, Lucas, I've heard a lot about Sophia, but I've never actually met her."
Lucas's eyes widened in surprise. "Oh, man, I'm so sorry, Ryder! I've been so caught up in my own stuff, I forgot you two haven't met yet."
Ryder chuckled. "No worries, brother. But I'd like to meet her. Soon."
Lucas grinned. "Absolutely! I'll set it up. Maybe we can all grab dinner together this week?"
Ryder nodded. "Sounds good to me. I'm curious to meet the woman who's captured your heart."
Lucas's face turned slightly red, but he smiled. "Yeah, well, she's pretty amazing. You'll see."
