Hye sun had just woken up when he heard voices coming from downstairs. Loud laughter was all he could hear. He wondered who actually had the guts to make such noise this early, but he decided to freshen up first. Going down, he sees his mom talking to someone. When she sees him, she smiles and excuses herself.
The girl she was talking to turns and gives him a smile, showing her dimples. Jessica is a 21 year old Nigerian who considered herself to be short, although she was taller than a lot of people. She was about 5'5 feet and the guy in front of her was probably 6 feet tall. Jessica is light skinned, but not as light as some people and her eyes becomes smaller whenever she smiles. Hye Sun on the other hand is a typical Korean looking guy. The height, the skin, the dressing, everything. He was like a Kpop idol straight out of ATEEZ.
"Hye sun-ah, you're a lot more taller than I remember". He stared at her blankly. She frowned.
"It's me, your cousin, Jessica from Nigeria". He frowned now. She sighed.
"Nice to know you don't remember me anymore". Just then, his mother re-enters the living room. B
"She will be staying here for three months". She said.
"What?" Hye sun exclaimed. His mother ignored him and smiled at Jessica.
"Come, let's go for a drive".
"Ok," she said and waved at Hye sun,
"bye cousin".
Hye sun is 18 and an only child. His parents are the richest people in his community and he was proud of that. Absolutely proud. He was also the most popular guy in school. Your typical high school annoying male teenager that is arrogant but still loved by everyone. Moreover, his aunt owned the school. Being an only child was like a blessing to him. He got all the attention he wanted and therefore was spoilt.
He went back to his room after they left. 10 minutes later, someone knocks on his door and opens it. It was Jessica.
"Don't you go to school?" She asks.
"Didn't you leave?" He fired back but she smiles.
"Aunt got an important call and just left". Jessica replies.
"So," she continues,
"you don't go to school?"
"Or have you magically graduated?" He ignores her. She shakes her head and completely enters the room. Hye sun looks at her for a second and continues playing with his phone.
She sits down and continues talking.
"I don't see how you'd graduate though". Jessica says,
"I heard you go to school at most once a week".
"If you were in Nigeria with this going to school once a week thing, they would have repeated you a lot of times". She tilts her head to the side. "Although they probably wouldn't cause you're one of the rich kids". She stops for a second and looks at him.
"Do you know what repeating means?" He ignores her.
"It means you won't be able to graduate and would up end up being a disgrace".
"Shut up and leave". Was all he said. Jessica froze for about five seconds before standing up with a smile and walking to him.
"If you try that again ehh, I swear you'll hate me".
"I already hate you". Jessica smiles.
"Then you'll just hate me more". She says and exits the room.
He picks up his phone and dials a number.
"Are you still coming tomorrow?" He asks and waitsfor a reply.
"Please do, I might run mad if you don't".
"Then leave the house", Jessica shouts from downstairs. He shakes his head.
"Just some random girl". He tells the person on the other line.
"Yeah," he nods and ends the call.
The next morning, Jessica was in the living room taking ice cream. She had originally planned to try Korean food but when she remembered all the raw meat and fish, she gave up and went for ice cream. Jessica was an only child also, but for her, it was rather sad. Her parents were both dead and she had no sibling so her life was pretty lonely. Sometimes. She learned to live life fully so she came for a vacation in Korea.
Jessica was brought out of her thoughts when someone walks in. As she had just put a spoonful of ice cream in her mouth, she could only wave. But the boy did not answer nor wave back. Instead, he was frozen. She waves a hand in front of him.
"You've never seen a black girl before?" She asks him. He shakes his head.
"I've never seen a black person before". He smiles.
"And you're amazingly pretty". She gives him a look. "You are definitely exaggerating". Jessica deadpans. He continues staring at her for a while, then he stretches his hand.
"I'm Jong-in". She looks at his hand and back at his face. Done with staring back at the human being, she shakes his hand.
"I'm Jessica". She says.
"I know," he replies.
"Oh," she says, "great. I'm going back to my ice cream". He nods, "I'm going in".
"Bye". As he leaves, she shakes her head and sighs.
"Another one who doesn't go to school". She looks upstairs towards Hye sun's room and a smile appears on her face. Twenty minutes later, she opens his door and enters the room.
"What do you want?" Hye sun asks. She shrugs.
"Nothing really. I just came to see what you two were doing". She looks at the television screen and shakes her head.
"Don't your eyes hurt from staring at the screen all the time?" Hye sun sighs.
"Get out". She rolls her eyes, at least he wasn't as rude as before.
"Okay". She says and leaves. Five minutes later, she comes back.
"Could I change my room?" She asks.
"It's completely pink, I hate pink". Hye sun and Jong-in both give her a look.
"What?" Jessica asks.
"Do whatever you want," Hye sun says, "just leave us alone". She nods and leaves. Well, probably just steps out cause she came back some seconds later.
"Is the room next to yours empty".
"It's not". He replies, but she ignores him and goes on to check.
"It is, and I'm moving in".
"Sure". He was about to continue what he was doing when she comes back in.
"Oh God". Hye sun says.
"Do you know where the bed sheets are?" She asks them. Hye sun ignores her, while Jong-in shakes his head.
"You're both useless". She says and leaves again. This time around, they just gave up and waited for her cause they knew she was coming back. Jessica did come back, but with two bed sheets on her hand.
"Should I use this?" She raises the black one.
"Or this?" She raises the red one.
"Black". Hye sun reluctantly replies. Jong-in shrugs.
"I'll use both". She goes out and comes back for like the tenth time that afternoon.
"So in Nigerian movies, black and red are used to illustrate a cult, and I'm not in one, so I'll just use white". Jong-in smiles while Hye sun sighs. As she was leaving, Hye sun stops her.
"Why are you doing this?" She shrugs. "No reason. You all just look bored staying at home and all, so I'm trying to keep you busy". She smiles widely and exits the room, then she comes back again.
"Please do well to change your hair colour," she pauses.
"it looks awful".
"I told you". Jong-in said after she leaves.
"Red honestly doesn't suit you".
"Piss off". Hye sun says and his friend laughs. Hye Sun did not know why Jessica was in the house, but it really felt as if she was a spy sent by his mum.
