A knock startled me from my thoughts. Elissa stood in the doorway, her eyes red-rimmed. "I heard what happened," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion. "I'm so sorry, Raya."
My heart ached for her. Despite her privileged life, Elissa possessed a genuine kindness I rarely encountered. "It's not your fault," I mumbled, unsure how to respond.
Her grip tightened on the doorknob. "I can talk to Father. Maybe they'll let me go in your place."
A surge of protectiveness washed over me. Elissa, sheltered and innocent, wouldn't survive the harsh realities of the academy, let alone the dangers I might face. "No," I blurted out before I could stop myself. "You wouldn't last a day there."
A flicker of something unreadable crossed her face before it was masked by a pout. "Fine," she huffed, turning to leave. "But you better come back, Raya. Promise me."
