In the middle of the night Effy silently began to sob to herself, it was now only her and Phil in the hospital room - but Phil was fast asleep on the chair besides her. The nurse noticed the change in her emotions and stepped into the room.He glanced over to her crying and quickly noticed Phil fast asleep in the chair.
He slowly approached and knelt down until he was level with her.
He lowered his voice and speak gently. "Why don't I get rid of him for a while? You can have a bit of privacy to cry and release all those emotions that need to be let loose."
"I feel bad." Effy whispered back, sometimes she forgets her and Phil are still teenagers
The nurse smiled slightly, seeing how caring and gentle she was being, he couldn't help but smile back a little bit.
"It's okay, you have every right to cry after what you've just been through. You've just experienced one of the most brutal things that you'll ever have to face in life. You shouldn't feel bad for being human and feeling emotional about it" He paused for a split second and spoke again. "I'm going to take him out and get him a coffee, okay? Is that alright?"
"But it's midnight is it even open?" Effy felt guilty for sending Phil away, but then again she did need some alone time as she was truly broken
The nurse smiled once again, and he realized that she was much more concerned about others than herself. He thought to himself that she had a truly caring heart and was very sweet.
"I know of a place open this late. I'll only be gone for about 10 minutes. In the mean time, let yourself fall apart a little bit. You deserve it."
She nodded slowly, she didn't disagree with what he said. She needed to just have some time to let her emotions flow freely without having to put on a brave face about everything. "Are you taking Phil with you?"
The nurse nodded.
"Yeah. I'll make sure he only gets a coffee and brings him right back here. We have strict security in here so he won't be gone for long, don't worry. Just focus on you and release everything you need to, okay?"
She nodded again, she wanted some alone time. But she knew that she would also need to face everyone at some point. She felt too weak and defeated by life to have to defend herself and her mistakes right now. "Just come back soon."
Her eyes slowly filled with relief and gratitude for the amount of compassion that this nurse was showing her. She was used to people getting angry or disgusted with her when she relapsed, but this man was treating her like a human and not some addict with no hope.
The nurse gave her a tiny smile and then stood up. "I'll come back as soon as possible, I promise. You take care of yourself okay? Let it all of those emotions out, Phil wake up."
Her eyes started to tear, she felt like he had been much more of a comfort to her than he realized. He reminded her of her dad, she was slowly realizing that there were still plenty of good people who didn't care about the status of a person and instead cared about their heart. "Huh why?" Phil rubbed his eyes as he sat up
The nurse looked over at him. "Because she needs time to herself, she's been through just about the craziest few days of her entire life, and she needs some alone time to let her emotions roll in freely. She's asked that you don't come back in here for the next 10 minutes, is that fine?"
He looked tired but he knew it was the sensible answer. She needed some time to process everything and come to terms with everything that had just happened. He spoke in a tired voice. "Yeah, no worries. I'll be waiting out here."
