The following portion is written as a flashback in third-person from when Ameera was five years old.

*the rest of the book is written in first person; switching from the leads' perspectives.*

I am sorry in advance for the short chapter.

---

"Tomorrow is father's day! We are going to be making cards for the amazing dads, the protectors of our families! " Mrs.Rafiq (Ameera's teacher) exclaimed.

Ameera was puzzled, as a young girl, with no father present in her house, this was new information to her.

"What if we don't have a dad?" Ameera asked innocently.

The teacher's expression shifted, a mix of surprise and a hint of sadness crossing her features.

"Make a card for someone you love!" she exclaimed, trying to make Ameera happy.

Ameera's father had passed away just a few months before she was born, so she never met him.

---

*school ended*

"Bhaiya , Ashu Didi (sister), Asalamwalaykum," Ameera called out to Ayaan (as of now was 11) and Aisha, running towards them.

"Walaykumasalam Meeru!" both of them greeted her back, smiling at their youngest sister's cuteness.

They started walking home, about to cross the sidewalk, Ayaan and Aisha offered both their hands to Ameera.

Lifting her into the air and Ameera giggled with delight.

"Bhaiya?" Ameera asked.

"Jee (Yes), Meeru, What's up?" Ayaan responded.

"What happened to Baba (dad)?" Ameera wondered.

Aisha and Ayaan stopped walking, startled by the sudden question, it brought them too much pain. They remembered everything about him. Ameera was the only one in the family who had not met him, yet she was the one most like him.

The older siblings exchanged a glace, Ayaan decided to take this question.

"Meeru, you know that Baba returned to Allah a long time ago" Ayaan said quietly, his voice traced with a twinge of sorrow.

It brought Ayaan the most pain because he had known his father the longest, being the oldest child, he rarely talked about his father.

"You know, you remind me a lot of him," Aisha said tousling Ameera's hair lovingly.

"Really?!" Ameera said her eyes widening with wonder.

Ayaan closed his eyes, the memories of his father came rushing back stronger than ever.

Aisha noticed her brother's discomfort immediately, and tried changing the subject, "Hey Meeru, do you want to make cookies when we get home?"

Ameera's eyes lit up with excitement, "The ones with the cimamom and chocolate?!"

"Yes, the ones with the cimamom and the chocolate," Aisha said, entertaining the adorable pronunciation of cinnamon.

"Bhaiya! Can I have a piggy-back ride?" Ameera asked Ayaan.

Ayaan's heart softened and he smiled at his sister's enthusiasm.

"Of course, Meeru," he replied affectionately.

---

*reached home*

Ayaan lowered Ameera to the ground and she ran to the kitchen, eager to make dessert.

"Thanks for what you did back there Ashu, I owe you one," Ayaan said acknowledging his sister's kindness.

"Bhaiya, that's what siblings are for," Aisha responded, squeezing his hand reassuringly.

Ayaan thanked Allah for having such supportive little sisters.

"Now, shall we make some cookies?" Aisha suggested, her eyes twinkling with anticipation.

"We shall," Ayaan agreed, leading the way to the kitchen.

The rest of the evening was filled with chocolate and laughter.
