Lucy and I went through the whole day of school and I couldn't help, but feel homesick. It was after all of our classes and I was sitting on a bench outside thinking about home.
I missed my brothers, no matter how annoying they were. I missed Ethan, always sacrificing for everyone else and doing his best to protect us. I missed Jordan, he was the one who was gentle and always there for us. I missed Parker, he always was the one who snuck me candy and took me to the amusement park. I missed Tristan, we would always play pranks on everyone and we would laugh for hours. I missed Luca, his innocence and happiness was so refreshing.
I couldn't help it. I started crying. I missed my brothers. I had always been with them, and now suddenly not being able to run into their arms whenever I wanted to, made me feel terrible.
"Carter?" Raspberry looked at me with concern.
Then I heard another person call my name. I looked up slightly, and saw Hanabusa holding out a handkerchief to me. I quickly turned away and started wiping at my eyes, until I eventually took the handkerchief.
"Come with me. I'll take you somewhere that will make you feel better."
While we were walking to this unknown place, Hanabusa started talking. "Would you like to talk about it?"
I shrugged. "It's nothing that major. I just miss my brothers."
"Wanna talk about them?" He asked nicely.
I didn't know if I wanted to tell Hanabusa my life just yet, but I did want to talk about my brothers, if I'm being honest, so I started talking.
"Well, I have five brothers-"
"Wow." Hanabusa said with wide eyes. "I don't have any siblings."
"Yeah, it's a lot at times, but I love them. There's Ethan who's 28, Jordan who is 25. Parker is 19, Tristan is 16, and Luca is 5. Our mom passed away four years ago, and I never knew my dad. Ethan is the 'father' figure for me. He provides for everyone and is very protective. He is a lawyer, so he's never home much, but when he is it's great. Jordan is the kindest and most nurturing. He worries over all of us, even Ethan. Jordan is a veterinarian. Parker is the party animal. He's the most fun one I think. He's the one who will sneak food into the movie theater, so we don't have to buy overpriced stuff there. He's the one who will take me to the amusement park and ride the rides with me. He's also an artist. Tristan is the trickster. We always prank people together. No matter what he looks like, he's quite brilliant and comes up with the most elaborate plans. Then there's little Luca, who is always happy with everything, and tries to make everyone else happy, even if it means he has to give up something he wants."
"One time, he had been saving all his money up to get this one super expensive toy, and he had finally gotten enough to get it, then that day, Parker accidentally crashed his car and it was gonna take quite a bit of money to get it fixed. When Luca heard, he gave all his toy money to Parker, so he could fix his car, saying that Parker needed it more than him. A few months later, Parker had sold one of his paintings for a lot of money, and bought Luca the toy he had sacrificed, so Parker could fix his car."
When I had finished I had finally noticed that we were standing by a beautiful lake, and Hanabusa was staring at me intently. I must've been talking for awhile. I blushed and muttered a sorry.
Hanabusa smiled and shook his head. "There's nothing to apologize for. If I'm being honest, I'm quite jealous." I gave him a confused look and he chuckled. "The love you have with your siblings is honest and warm. I don't know what it's like to have siblings, so I've never experienced something like that. But I do know what it's like to lose a parent. My dad passed away when I was younger in a car accident, but I still have my mother, fortunately." He said
Suddenly I smelled something wonderful. It was fresh and sweet. Hanabusa saw that I could smell something and started to walk over to the bushes. Behind them were these amazing roses.
"They're pure strain roses. Roses that grow wild and without fertilizer. Although they aren't as pretty as regular roses, they're fragrance is fabulous." I nodded. "Rose water comes from pure strain roses."
"Did you learn all this from your mom?" I asked.
He shook his head and said, "I learned it from my dad. He was in horticulture."
I thought about it. His dad was a horticulturalist and his mom is a flower arranger. "Did your parents by chance meet by..."
He nodded. "They met in a rose garden in May. When the roses bloomed, they met for the first time. That's why even though I'm born in October, my name derives from the month of May. "
"It's a great name." I said softly. He turned around and smiled, agreeing.
"The smell of roses can heal people's hearts and cheer them up. Try it." He said to me.
I bent down taking a big breath of the roses. I did feel better. Even though I still felt home sick, I didn't feel as bad as I did. I felt re-energized.
"You know what? I'm going to go practice making sweets, wanna come?" I said throwing a small smile towards Hanabusa. He nodded and we spent the rest of the day making sweets together.
