Summer jolted awake, her heart pounding against her chest and sweat dripping down her forehead. It was the same nightmare again—the screeching tyres, the blinding lights, and the feeling of impending doom. But this time, there was something different. A voice echoed in her mind, haunting and unfamiliar. "Why did you try to run away, Angel?"
She turned to her side; her husband, Hoseok, sleeping peacefully beside her; she could make out his hair falling gently over his forehead. Despite the darkness shrouding the room, his presence offered some solace; he was, after all, her sunshine.
Summer reached out, shaking him gently until he stirred.
"What's wrong, baby?" Hoseok mumbled, his voice heavy with sleep.
"It's the dream again," Summer whispered, her voice trembling. "The accident, the man... I can't shake it off."
He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close in a protective embrace. "It's just a bad dream, sweetheart. I'm here, and as long as I'm alive, I won't let anything happen to you."
But Summer couldn't shake off the feeling of unease. The dream felt too real and vivid to be dismissed as just a figment of her imagination. And the man's voice—it sounded like a distant memory, a fragment of a past she couldn't quite grasp.
And for the next week, she kept seeing the same man in her nightmare, making her afraid to even fall asleep.
Summer woke with a startle, her body drenched in cold sweat as she breathed heavily. Feeling frustrated and disoriented, she let out a distressed sob.
Hoseok had just entered the room late at night after finishing off his work, only to see his wife sobbing her heart out. He rushed to her.
"Hey! Hey, love, it's okay, you're okay, shhh," he whispered, his arms enveloping her in a comforting embrace. "It's just a bad dream."
But Summer couldn't shake off the feeling of unease that clung to her like a second skin. "It's always the same," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper as her fingers held onto his crisp shirt as if it were her anchor, as if he were her anchor, her only protector. "The accident, the man... I can't escape it."
Hoseok's expression tightened before a flicker of concern crossed his features. "That man you told me about?" he asked, his voice laced with a hint of apprehension. "Tell me what you see."
Summer hesitated, unsure whether or not she could share the details of her recurring nightmare without breaking down again. But the words spilled out before she could stop them. "There's this man," she began, her voice trembling. "I don't know who he is, but he's always there, asking me why I tried to run away." Her eyes filled with tears yet again as she hiccuped. "And I'm so scared, Hoseok. I can feel my helplessness as I lay there in my own pool of blood, the pain searing through my body while I'm trapped in the wreckage, but more than that, I felt so, so scared. I'm afraid he's not just a part of my nightmares." Her red, fearful eyes sought his, hoping to receive comfort.
