"Give them some room, please." Grover helps us up. "What happened?" Percy asks confused. I touch my head as I feel a migraine coming on. I look around for Ms Dodds. "Where's Ms Dodds?" I ask Mr Brunner. "I didnt do anything them!" Nancy whines to which I just ignore her.
"Everyone go back to your lunches. It's all right. Percy and Hope just need a moment that's all." "I'm sorry did nobody else see that?" I ask trying to figure why everyone so calm. "Where's Ms Dodds?" Percy asks repeating my previous question. Mr Brunner and Grover look at each other confused. "Percy, Hope, there's no one here by that name." Mr Brunner lies.
We sit in the deans with Grover going over what happened to which em and Percy both said. We did not touch her cause that's the truth. I pulled my fist back and a blue light of wind punched that bitch in the face and water came outta nowhere and dragged her ass in the fountain. I didn't know you could shadowbox somebody and they'd actually get hurt.
"The truth...can be so very hard to determine... but in this case the truth seems very hard to deny. Mr. Jackson and Ms. Jackson, a number of your classmates saw you two and Mr Underwood arguing with Ms Bobofit, yet you have offered no explanation for how she ended up in that fountains me with a broken nose, other than uh..." he checks the report. "I didn't touch Nancy." He reads. "Now isn't there anything else you'd like to say for yourselves?" He asks. I scoff. "What do you want to us to say that i punched her and he shoved her because we didn't." "We didn't touch Nancy." Percy adds to my statement.
"Okay." He sighs. "Mr Underwood? Do you have anything to add?" He asks him. He's not gonna say anything because we are telling the truth he saw the whole thing. Besides our best friend he wouldn't rat us out or lie on us.
"Yes." Our head snaps to him in confusion. Apparently not. "I do." "Go on." He ushers. He takes a breathe. "Percy had told me earlier that he and Star wanted to get back at Nancy for all she'd don't to us." "Grover?" Percy says hurt that our best friend is saying this. I sit up and prop my elbows on my knees with my fingers interlocked tilting my head in shock.
"And they aren't being truthful about what happened at the fountain." "Grover!" Percy says getting even more angry at him. "Excuse me! Are you saying you say Mr. Jackson and Ms. Jackson assault Ms Bobofit?" He asks. He looks us in the eyes seeing the hurt in them and then turns away. "Yes, I did. I saw Eli punch Nancy in the face. It- it was very graphic." My mouth parts in shock as tears form in my eyes. I can't believe Grover would do that us.
Me and Percy sit next to each other at the bus stop sulking in our own pity. "Not for you, not for any of us." Mr. Brunner says as he approaches us. "I'm very concerned about you both. I saw what happened at the museum." "We didn't touch Nancy." Percy states matter-of-factly. "I know you didn't." We glance at him. "At least, I know you think you didn't." I narrow my eyes and sigh heavily. "Do you wanna tell me what you two think did happen?" Me and Percy give each other a knowing glance and then turn our head forward looking for the bus. "You can tell me. I might just understand." "Wanna bet?" I ask looking at him. He chuckles. "Percy...Hope...I've seen a lot of young people go through this sort of thing in my time but of all of them, I suspect that...you two might have the most difficult journey. I suspect that you are special. So much more so than you know." "Just...stop." Percy says fed up with non sense. "Please. Stop trying to make us feel better or- or not." I say leaning back against the bench. Percy stand up. "Okay? We don't need any more stories they aren't helping." A truck pulls up to the curb and I grab my backpack and my suitcase. "This is our ride, we're going home." I state.
We walk down the hallway of our dingy rundown apartment building to our own dingy apartment. We hear Eddie the superintendent trying with our step-father. Gabe. Piece of shit. "There's nothing wrong with the plumbing in this building. Maybe you should see a doctor." "How do you know I'm not a doctor, huh?" Gabe retort arrogantly. "Have you considered eating more fruit?" He says back.
Eddie opens the door. "Hey! I eat plenty of fruit. Have you considered eating more fruit?" He says dumbly. He sighs as he shuts the and then he turns to us. "Oh! Hello, Percy. Hey, Hope." "Hey, Eddie-" "-sorry about that." I say finish Percy's sentence. "I'm walking out, you're walking in. I should be apologizing to you." I huff as he walks away.
We both stand in front of the door. "Ladies first." Percy says ushering for me to go in first. I glare at him and open the door. "W-Hell, Hello." Gabe says as we enter. "Welcome home, geniuses." "Is my mom home from work?" Percy asks ignoring him. "Oh, is that all you got to say to me? Huh? After failiin' outta school?" "We didn't fail out of school." I correct. "Your principal called, and that's what he said. He said you got kicked out." "They called Mom's cell." Percy points out. "What are you doing answering our mother's phone?" "I answer whatever ringing?" I scoff and shake my head in disbelief. Actually, wait. I can believe it.
"So, what'd you get kicked out for, hmm?" "He said we attacked a kid on a field trip." Percy answers. "Okay." He says a little stunned. "We didn't." I clarify. "All right, if...But still, if you're gonna live under my roof, you gotta live by my rules." My eyes wide this statement. "Your roof?" "Last time I check my mom is the only one with a job in this house." We retort. "Excuse me? I have a job. What does it look like I'm doing right now?" He asks. "Losing at imaginary poker." We say in unison. "Creepy...You would think that because you're a child, and you don't understand things like-" I roll my eyes and we look around for our mom. "Where's our mom?" Percy asks.
"I don't know. I don't know where your mom is. I'm not Nostradamus." I take breathe. "There is a multitude of reasons why that statement alone was wrong." "What are we doing guys? Everytime!" We don't spare him another glance and just walk away. "Wow! Wow!"
We look down the hallway and see mom outside sitting on the porch in the rain. We walk towards her stopping halfway. "Mom..." I call out pressing my lips together. She looks back at us and walks towards us. "We're really sorry." "We tried this time, I swear." We say empatheticly. "You know how hard we've been trying." "But this time it really was our fault." She pulls us into a hug. "It really wasn't our fault." She holds us tightly in her grasp.
"Mom...you're making us wet." I whisper. She pulls away. "I'm sorry. I'm just very glad to see you both." She grabs a towel. "I found Gabe on the phone with the headmaster, he told me what he thinks happened with Nancy Bobofit. I told him I believe my kid. It was a real short call." She states. Me and Percy smile knowing we always have a mom who backs us up. "Hey, all that matters is that you're here, okay?" We nod. "And that I had enough time..." she pulls out two bags of blue chocolate. "To pick up your welcome home gifts." We take the bag and I open mine immediately eating it.
"Mr. Brunner called me, too. He told me about Grover." My face falls at the mention of our EX best friend. "Do you wanna talk about it?" I shake my head a Percy stays silent. "Is there something else you wanna talk about?" Me and Percy give each other a side glance and sigh. "Something happened to us." "Something has been happening to us." We state. "More than just our mind wandering and it got worse and..." "Gabe?" She calls out. "Mom?" Percy says confused. He walks out the living room and toward us: "I don't know how anyone expects me to get any work done-" "The twins and I are leaving for Montauk. I'll- I'll have the car back by Sunday morning. I called to reserve the place as soon as I got off the phone with Yancy." She says cutting him off.
"Who's Yancy?" I narrow my eyes at him. "Okay. And why exactly am I okay with this?" "Because on my way home on Sunday, I'm gonna stop at D'Angelo's and pick up sandwiches in time for tipoff, but if you make this miserable, I'm gonna go anyway and then I'm gonna eat my sandwich and yours while I listen to the game on the radio." She says firmly. Me and Percy look at Gabe. "You know I hate watching the Knicks alone." "So do I!" She exclaims. I scratch the back of my neck k awkwardly. "W- make sure they out the put the hot peppers on my sandwich, please?" He says aggressively. "Not if you're gonna ask like that." "I said, 'please.'" She rolls her head at him.
"Please, could you have them on the peppers on my sandwich?" "You got it." She says before going to pack. Me and Percy stare at Gabe. "Take your shoes off before you get in my car. You understand me?" I salute him sarcastically. He turns around and walks down the hallway. "Yeah, walk away..." I say as he turns into the living room. "Like a bitch." I mutter.
