Lucas's eyes gazed into the darkness, his mind wandering back to the memories he'd tried to bury. Growing up, his childhood was a war zone. His parents' constant fighting and neglect had left him and his brother, Marcus, to fend for themselves. Lucas had always felt responsible for protecting Marcus, who was five years younger. One fateful night, their parents' argument had turned violent, and Lucas had intervened, trying to shield Marcus from the chaos. But in the midst of the struggle, he'd made a split-second decision that would haunt him forever. He'd pushed Marcus out of harm's way, but in doing so, he had inadvertently pushed him into the path of their father's enraged fist.
Marcus had suffered a devastating injury, and Lucas has carried the guilt of that moment with him ever since. He'd vowed to always put others before himself and to never let anyone he loved get hurt again.
But life had other plans. His mistakes had piled up, and he'd lost count of the people he'd let down. His brother, his friends, and even himself. The weight of his past mistakes had driven him to seek redemption, to prove he was more than just a product of his toxic upbringing.
As he gazed at Jennifer, he knew he couldn't let her down too. He'd do anything to protect her, to make up for all the times he'd failed others.
I had just discovered that Jennifer's past was actually bigger than I had thought it was. Not only was she in an abusive relationship with him, but he was part of a secret organization that was responsible for the attacks on us.
My men and I had captured the bastard and had managed to cuff out some information, of which he only stated that he was part, and before we could ask him for more information, the bastard took his life by drinking poison that he had kept in his pocket.
What the hell? Why didn't I check his pockets before asking such questions of him? But the only tangible information that he could cuff out before dying was that you can't trust anyone, as they are everywhere, smirking.
This was actually bigger than I thought it was. Who am I kidding about asking when his lifeless body was here? So many questions ran through my head. I wanted to ask who I should trust or not.
But before returning to the hospital room where Jennifer lay, he was lost in thought when he noticed Jennifer's voice drifting from her phone in the hospital room. At first, he thought she was talking to her sister or a friend, but then he heard the tone hushed, urgent, and laced with fear.
He slowed his pace, his instincts kicking in. Who was she talking to? And what was she saying?
I can't do it anymore," Jennifer whispered, her words barely audible. "I've fallen in love with him... I know it was just a mission, but...please, you have to understand."
Lucas's eyes narrowed as he crept closer, trying not to make a sound. His instincts kicked in, and he wondered who she was talking to and what she was saying. His heart raced with anticipation and fear.
"You'll do as you're told," a cold, menacing voice replied on the other end. "You'll finish the job, or you'll suffer the consequences."
Lucas's eyes narrowed. Who was this person, and what did they want with Jennifer? And then it hit him—the truth. Jennifer wasn't who she claimed to be. She was a plant, a spy, an assassin...
He felt like he'd been punched in the gut. All this time, he'd thought she was his wife, his partner, his love—but it was all a lie. She was someone he didn't know. Was Jennifer really her name, or wasn't it an act all along to get him to fall in love with her and kill him when he least expected it?
But before she could continue the conversation with the person on the other line, Lucas barged into the hospital room, the door slamming against the wall, making Jennifer scream in fear as she cowered under the sudden noise and intrusion before ending the call line.
As Lucas came closer to Jennifer, he couldn't shake off the feeling that he had been deceived all along. And then it hit him: was she really in love with him or was he really a pawn in her game?
"You're not who you say you are, are you?" Lucas demanded, his voice low and menacing.
Jennifer's eyes widened, and she tried to pull away, but Lucas yelled at her to remain firm and not move an inch.
"Tell me the truth," he growled. And Lucas's grip on her arm tightened as he pulled her closer. "Who sent you?" he growled.
Jennifer's gaze dropped, her eyes welling up with tears as she shook her head. "I'm so sorry, Lucas. I was once a skilled operative for the organization and had been assigned to eliminate you. But as I got to know you, the orders I received seemed to conflict with my growing feelings for you. I was torn between my loyalty and love for you and that of my past experiences and present emotions, which clashed like a stormy sea.
Lucas's eyes locked onto Jennifer, his mind reeling with the revelation. He'd thought he knew her, but now he realizes he's been blind to her true identity. The soft glow of the hospital room lights cast an ethereal glow on Jennifer's face, illuminating the rivulets of tears that streamed down her cheeks like liquid silver. "I was sent to kill you, Lucas. But then...I fell in love with you. Those words, she said, rang in his ears like a snake's venom.
Jennifer's voice barely whispered, "The organization. They're coming for us, Lucas. They won't stop until we're both dead. Lucas's world came crashing down like a house of cards in a hurricane. Sent to kill him? The question echoed in his mind like a scream in a canyon, reverberating off the walls of his sanity. By whom? The unknown assailant's identity hung in the air like a specter, taunting him with its silence.
"They're coming for us, aren't they?" Lucas asked, his voice cold and deadly.
Jennifer nodded, tears streaming down her face. "They won't stop until we're both dead."
The words sent a chill down Lucas's spine as he realized the true extent of the danger they were in. He knew he had to act fast to protect Jennifer and himself from the organization's deadly reach.
Lucas's grip on Jennifer tightened, his mind racing with strategies and plans. He knew he had to protect her, no matter what. But little did he know, the organization was already closing in, their agents lurking in the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
