Chapter 1 | Familiar 🌺

-Zane's POV-

On a warm sunny day, I woke up yawning and stretched in my wolf form. Around me, the sound of the nearby river mingled with the rustling leaves. My friend Kay, who is also a rogue and a beta but amusingly smaller than me—a rarity since omegas are naturally smaller—stood nearby holding a dead rabbit. I'm a notably large omega, especially in my wolf form, but enough about me.

We had met during our teenage years and quickly became close, deciding to stick together. It looked like Kay had already eaten and had fetched breakfast for me as well.

I slowly stood up and stretched, as he dropped the rabbit for me before lying down to watch me eat.

"So, Zach, wanna head to the river stream later? It's summer! The flowers are blooming, and it's getting hot. I want to take a bath in the river," He exclaimed nonchalantly.

I thought about it for a moment before nodding. It was indeed getting pretty warm, and my black fur might easily lead to heatstroke under the sun.

"Yeah, I need to take a bath...I stink," I chuckled to myself as I finished off the rabbit and stared at the ground. Then, looking up at Kay, I shifted the topic. "Did you hear anything last night? The howls..."

Kay scrunched his nose and glanced around uncomfortably. "Yeah, I heard there was some sort of fight between the Shadowcrest Pack and the Mystic Pines Pack. Apparently, the alpha of Shadowcrest took in a female omega who had escaped from Mystic Pines after being abused. The Mystic Pines alpha wanted her back, so it turned into a whole fight..."

I listened, scoffing in disbelief. "So they abuse an omega and expect her to just come back? You know what, let's head to the stream. I fucking hate packs..." I muttered the last part under my breath as Kay stood up and we began walking there.

We soon arrived at the stream, and Kay immediately ran and jumped into the water, splashing me in the process. I chuckled and joined him.

"Ahhh..this feels nice doesn't it?" He says with a smirk.

"Don't make me regret coming here with you." I chuckle as we splash water at each other, Kay trying to 'eat' the water making a funny face.

However, I got back on the grass and rolled around to dry myself, it did indeed feel nice, I admit. As I lay down, I watched him play in the water like a pup.

"You haven't grown a bit, have you?" I say with a smug tone, as I lick my paw to clean the inside.

"I will splash water on you."

"Do not."

Kay starts giggling.

"Kay I swear to God—Kay!" As gasp as he splashes water onto me, making me let out a deep chuckle and sprang up immediately as I tackle him in the water.

It was now nighttime, I was at the stream by myself, Kay was asleep, and I happened to be thirsty. I crouch slightly as I begin drinking, until... I get a whiff of a scent. I look up and see yellow eyes looking at me before the wolf starts backing up. Definitely a he, as I notice how young he looked, definitely a young teen. Much smaller than me, he had brownish fur. I look him up and down, he was also definitely from a pack so it made me confused on why a wolf from a pack would come drink from a stream as every wolf pack has their own water hole, but in all honesty, I didn't care as I drink my fill and casually trot away. I could see the confusion in his eyes, geez not all rogues are aggressive and violent.
