"It gives me strength to have somebody to fight for; I can never fight for myself, but, for others, I can kill." - Emilie Autumn

———

The car travels along the highway as the kids chat amongst themselves. The window beside them is open, allowing a cool breeze to blow across their faces and Ayla is grateful for it. The space between the three kids is not very large, meaning she has been smushed against the two bodies for the multiple hours they have been driving. Throughout these hours the trio have successfully managed to discuss (very thoroughly) their opinions on every single comic book in the comic series they all enjoy.

Carls favourite was, of course, the one where aliens take over planet earth and the hero's must reclaim their home planet (which Sophia turned her nose up at).

Sophia prefers the one where all the animals begin to talk and the hero's must save them from being shipped off to an amusement park.

Meanwhile, Ayla confessed she didn't have a favourite, and that she enjoyed them all equally which caused both Carl and Sophia to shout, "Boringggggg!" loudly in her face.

This, of course, initiated a tickle fight in the backseat between the three.

Rick and Lori gaze at their childishness happily from the rear view mirror, glad that after all the kids have been through and seen, they still get the opportunity to act their age.

Ayla was glad for both Carl and Sophia. They made her feel so much better after the passing of her mother and the horrors she experienced at the CDC. Every second they spent together brought her closer and closer to the hopeful acceptance that they really could become her best friends with time.

It'd been a long time since Ayla had a best friend. The last friend she truly cherished was a girl called Enid from her middle school which Sophia reminded her terribly of. They both loved all things animals, and had that sweet innocent nature radiating off their skin which made everyone love them.

There is one thing Ayla was seemingly made to do when she was placed on this earth and that is to love passionately and unashamedly. This would explain the array of scars that cover her knuckles from the multiple fistfights she would get into during middle school to fend off Enid's bullies. Due to her quiet nature, Enid didn't have the courage to defend herself and resorted to suffering through the horrible insults thrown her way. Ayla tried to make the kids back off with her words but they never listened. It got to the point where Enid started pulling away from her because she didn't want Ayla's reputation to be dragged down with her's and Ayla knew then that she had to put a stop the cruelty. Thats when her fists got involved and eventually the bullies got the memo.

She wondered how Enid was doing now. Probably dead like everybody else.

The car had been silent for a while, everyone enjoying the hot Georgia sun and the feeling of being safe. However, the silence is suddenly interrupted when Sophia lets out a loud gasp. The sound causes Rick to turn around in a flash, worry etched across his features. "What is it? What's wrong?"
