Her plane landed. After 4 hours, Kathryn was relieved. She called John to let him know. She jumped into a cab and asked the driver to take her to her hotel. The speaking engagement was the next day. The day after she had to convince Chip to sign the bill and then her flight home. Today was really her only day to herself. She had decided to not unpack her suitcase and just set it aside. After her long power nap, she wanted to do a little shopping. She felt so guilty that she wanted to buy John something. She went into a store and bought him a couple of nice ties and collared shirts for work. The usual.
The next day she was nervous yet prepared for her speech. She thought about what John said, just be strong, and go through. A couple hours passed, and Kathryn was relieved. She felt proud about herself, and decided to go out with an old friend she bumped into at the reception. But then, she didn't feel proud for what she was doing tomorrow. After her guilt session, her phone was ringing. It was John.
"Hello?" Kathryn asked into the phone.
"Hey honey! How was your speech?" He asked proudly.
"Oh. It was good. I managed to not throw up." She laughed nervously.
John chuckles, "Good, I'm glad. So, what are you doing?" He asked her.
"Well, you know Sharon? When we first got married and moved into our old house? Sharon, across the street?" Kathryn tried to jog his memory.
"Oh! Yes! The one whose dog would never shut up." Kathryn laughed.
"Yeah, her. We are going out tonight." She told him.
"Alright, babe. Goodnight. I love you." He said lovingly.
"I love you too." Kathryn replied.
She felt so guilty knowing that John had trusted her and never really questioned who she was going with or where. After tomorrow, Kathryn would never be or feel the same.
The next day, Kathryn woke up immediately, dressed appropriate for the occasion. Not too fancy and not too casual. It's just gonna be a quick 20 minutes, sign the bill, and get out. She took a taxi to his hotel. She found out what room number and floor and took the elevator. She walked up to his room. She regretted every minute of this. She took a deep breath and knocked. After her second knock, Chip Coto opened up the door. He was dressed in sweatpants and a Nike shirt.
"Kathryn, you look--lovely today." He looked her up and down.
Perfect, she thought.
