Rutu & Tosses : A Hate Story

Rutu came up for the first toss as CSK captain. Faf was standing besides him, a reassuring presence despite being in the opposite team. Faf won the toss and decided to bat first. "We would have bowled first" Rutu told to the presenter. He didn't mind losing the toss, Faf had behaved like a good friend he was.

Second toss against GT, Rutu lost again. It was hard to defend in Chepauk, but who can control the toss result after all?

Third toss against DC. Rutu wasn't sure how the pitch would behave. So again, he didn't mind losing the toss. They would have bowled first anyways.

Fourth toss loss and Rutu smiled in agony. How bad was his luck actually?

His teammates had started teasing him for the toss losses by now. Deepak had actually threatened him to kidnap him during the next toss if he didn't win. Bravo was talking about finding some clone of him for the toss.

Ruturaj sighed in relief as he won the toss for the fifth match. Four losses had made him realise it was no easy ask. Today was an important win, a tricky pitch, getting thrown into batting first could be dangerous. So when he came back to the dug out, everyone stood up and patted his back. It was a reception better than when he won his first match as captain.

A toss loss again in the next match and normalcy returned for Rutu. Three more toss losses in next three matches and he seriously started considering the idea that something was actually wrong with him. No one lost these many tosses. He calcualated his win percentage, 1.1 percent! Absymal!

"Mahi bhai tell him to win the toss yar, the ball becomes a soap in dew" Jadeja complained to MS.

Rutu palmed his face, he was really getting cornered by the team. He looked at Mahi bhai who chuckled while shaking his head.

"We can't control the tosses right, we all know" MS spoke and Rutu bobbed his head ferociously, why was nobody taking this in consideration?

"But.. " MS spoke again and Rutu looked up to listen.

"Rutu you'll keep practicing tosses, you won't leave until you win 200 tosses"

Rutu looked around with wide eyes, were they serious? All others were applauding the idea and Mahi bhai did sound serious, but he could hope he was joking, because it really didn't make sense.

"Bravo and Deepak will keep an eye" MS added. "Sure, sure" the two bowlers hi-fied.

"Mahi bhai? "

"What? " MS raised his eyebrows.

"What if I still lose? " Rutu asked tentatively.

Jaddu reached out to whack him on his head, "Toss nhi jeet rha thik hai, achha achha bol toh sakta hai? "

The young captain looked at Mahi bhai for help as he massaged his scalp, but the man simply shook his head.

"Ughh, leave it. Gimme a coin" Rutu muttered as he started his toss practice.

3 matches later, Rutu still didn't win a single toss. He would go back to the dug out, the team members will chuckle at his helpless face and will say, "it's okay, we were prepared for us to bat first anyways"

"sorry guys" he would mutter and then go to pad up for batting.

This match, after losing the toss he straightaway went to Mahi bhai, "The practice isn't helping bhai, I'm winning there but not here"

MS chuckled, there is only so much we can do.

"Can I take someone else with me for spinning the coin next time? "

MS shook his head, "Will create so much unnecessary drama. Try spinning with left hand instead"

"I tried that in last match"

A chuckle with a gentle shake of head, "let's say sometimes it just sucks"

The kid captain smiled, "yeah, it sucks actually"

10/11 it stands now, what's your prediction for the end of season?
