Having waited for about ten minutes, Linka put a call through to his crew.
"Hello," Jumbo answered.
"The fish has swallowed the hook," Linka said. "Time to collect, you know where. All you guys have to do now is go to that same spot under the uncompleted overhead bridge. You will park the van and wait for the old man to come along and drop the cash into the van. You will drive straight to my
Long, Frankie and Jumbo had been waiting for Linka's phone call for close on two hours.
This was after Frankie had spied on the man who had come to to inspect the duplex opposite the bungalow, after Linka had settled with Labo on the one hundred million naira ransom money and had given Labo instructions on where to deliver the money, that Jumbo's phone began to ring.
It was Linka.
Jumbo answered, listened and then looked at Long and Frankie who regarded him expectantly.
"The old man has agreed to drop the money," Jumbo announced.
Frankie jumped to her feet with excitement. "I can't wait to grab my share of the loot." She glanced toward the bedroom. "Too bad I didn't have to do the butcher's work."
Jumbo gave her a hot look but said nothing. He knew that she was pulling his leg.
"How much did they agree on?" Long probed.
"I didn't ask," Jumbo said.
"We have to know how much we are collecting," Long insisted. "How else will we know if the old man is square with us? I mean what if he under pays, how will we know?"
"What do you intend to do if he under paid?" Jumbo asked.
Long glanced at Frankie and she shook her head. "Jumbo doesn't like to hear about that," she declared, smiling crookishly. "It's a cursed word."
"I think we'd better get going," Jumbo said impatiently.
"Who is staying behind with the girl?" Long enquired.
They looked at one another.
"Jumbo should stay with her" Frankie said. "He has fallen for her."
Blood rushed to Jumbo's face. "I am not staying here.
I want to be where the money is."
"Then may be Frankie should stay," Long suggested.
"Who, me? You are not serious. You want to leave me here while you grab the money and run with it, right? That's not going happen." Frankie moved to the door. "Why don't we leave her here?' she asked.
"May be we should take her with us," Jumbo suggested.
"Listen, guys," Frankie snapped. "I've had enough of that bitch in my hair. Once we have the money, we won't need her anymore."
"Keeping her after we have the money will be asking for trouble," Long observed. "Let us leave her here. Once we get money we'll tell the old man where to find her."
Frankie opened the front door half way. "Are we going or not?"
"Let's go," Long declared. He glanced at Jumbo. "May be you want to kiss her good bye." "You are mad," Jumbo retorted.
Laughing, Frankie stepped outside. Long, also laughing, followed Frankie outside. Jumbo went with them. None of them even bothered to look into the bedroom where they'd kept Linda.
They all sat in the front seat. Long handled the wheel. Frankie took the passenger's seat by the door while Jumbo sat in the middle.
Long drove the van through the gate and headed for the drove to the intersection that would lead them past the Ahau Bellow Way.
They were so engrossed with laying their hands on money that Frankie failed to notice Luke's car parked at the intersection.
She would have noticed that it was the same car that she had seen parked at the end of the road about two hours ago, while a man inspected the duplex opposite the bungalow.
Long swung the wheel to the left as he joined the Ahmadu Bello Way, and paused at the traffic light, waiting for the green.
This is the same traffic crossing that Long had smashed through the day before last.
Long wasn't crashing through the red today.
