The ride to Castle Bravo was mostly quiet as Mark was still trying to wrap his head around the revelation of his daughter’s kidnapping just hours earlier. He’s been pinching himself from time to time, trying to convince himself that he’s dreaming but no he wasn’t. Would this have happened if he didn’t drink? If he didn’t distance himself from Maddie and eventually have her leave with Emma? If he simply tried harder to be better than who he is now, would all this still have happened?
“When was the last time you spoke to Emma?” Vivienne asked softly.
Mark swallowed a lump in his throat, “About three years ago,” he answered quietly, “We tried to put the pieces back together, but it never worked out. The hole just kept getting bigger. Eventually, I started drinking, Emma didn’t think it was a good idea to keep Maddie around anymore and she took her,” Mark blinked back tears and took a deep breath, “I can’t tell you how much I hate myself for putting her through that. I was supposed to help and keep her happy and I couldn’t even do that.”
Mark felt Vivienne put a hand on his shoulder and gently squeeze it while giving him a consoling look. He gave her a small nod of appreciation, and went back to staring at the other side of the Osprey, he felt slightly better, like a portion of the weight on his shoulders lifted a little bit.
“Mind if we cut in?” Sam asked as he and Serizawa sat across from Mark and Vivienne, “It’s just, you’re gonna want to see this,” Sam said as he handed Mark a tablet.
Mark warily grabbed it and looked at its contents. The first slide was a detailed breakdown of the Orca, he skipped the slide, there was no point in analyzing something that was gonna be destroyed by the end of this operation. The next slide displayed the bioacoustics of “Titanus Mosura,” Mark swiped to the next slide, and it had the bioacoustics of “Titanus Rodan.” He kept swiping through each slide while listening to Sam’s explanation of how the Orca functioned. It wasn’t until he landed on a slide that displayed “Titanus Gojira’s” bioacoustics did Mark just pause and stare. He felt the anger and hate begin coursing through his veins, but Mark quickly stamped it out and moved to the next slide. There were more important things to do than get angry.
“The problem is, we don’t know which Titan she combined. But, if you can identify those frequencies we’ll be able to track the Orca,” Vivienne said as Mark landed on a slide displaying “Titanus Rayquaza’s” bioacoustics.
“Jesus,” Mark muttered in disbelief, “How many of these things are there?”
“18 and counting, after Gojira,” Serizawa said.
“18??”
“Most of them were discovered in deep hibernation,” Vivienne was quick to reassure, “While others were contained at top secret sights around the globe. The only ones loose and active around the planet are Godzilla and Rayquaza, who was only recently discovered.”
“Why don’t you kill them?” Mark asked with gritted teeth.
“The government wants to,” Serizawa replied, “But Emma and I believe some are benevolent, and now we may even have evidence to support it.”
“Oh, I would sure like to see this ‘evidence’,” Mark replied sarcastically.
He caught a glance of Sam and Serizawa giving each other a quick look before Serizawa glanced at Vivienne. Mark looked at all three of them, trying to figure out what silent conversation they were having. Then it hit him.
“Bullshit,” Mark said, not wanting to believe whatever they were going to say.
“It may seem so, Mark. But it is your choice if you would like to remain ignorant,” Serizawa said.
