P.O.V Ayame
When we returned to the house, it was already late. Conny needed to change her clothes.
Later, we all gathered in front of her to say goodbye.
"I'm clumsy and have never been as great as all of you. But I will do my best out there. Little Bernie is helping me," she said. I glanced at Don; he tried to hold back his tears. I stood next to Ray; he seemed... normal? He appeared to feel sorry for her, but that's just how I perceived it. I felt sad but also incredibly happy for Conny. She would now have a family and could continue to be happy.
"Conny..." Don's voice cracked. Now both of them were crying, despite their efforts not to.
"I don't want to go. Can I please stay with you?" she begged. Mother hugged her tightly. Then Conny had to leave.
It was quiet. Very quiet. Norman, Emma, and I went into the dining room. On the table... was Little Bernie? How?
"Conny?! That can't be," Emma echoed my thoughts. Norman and Gilda joined us with brooms. They were probably just about to clean up.
"Hey, Conny must have already left!"
"What should we do?"
Suddenly, Ray appeared.
"You can still catch her," he said.
"From the window, I saw that there was still light on at the gate. Mother isn't back yet either. So Conny must still be around."
"Emma, shut up!" Norman and I said simultaneously.
"Yes."
Then we decided to bring Conny's Little Bernie to Norman and Emma. I stood next to Ray.
"Ray, what's going on?"
"I'm sorry. I can't tell you. You have to follow Norman and Emma! Right now!" he said to me, a little louder. Feeling intimidated, I ran after Norman and Emma as fast as I could. Why? Why did Ray want me to go after Conny? So many questions. I finally caught up with them. Emma looked disturbed, as did Norman. When they noticed me, I had a clear view of the loading area. Conny... The sight was so cruel. I felt like I was going to throw up. Did Ray know that? Who killed Conny?
Suddenly, we heard voices.
"Is someone there?"
"Hey, I heard voices."
"Probably just our imagination."
The door opened. Norman, Emma, and I quickly hid under the car. I wanted to go to Ray!
"I could go for a stray cat right now."
"What, you eat cats or something?"
We heard footsteps. Then we peeked out from under the car. Oh my god. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. But there was no doubt. I really saw them. Monsters. No, demons. They couldn't be anything else. We kept our mouths shut to avoid screaming. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Conny was taken out of the car. The monster opened its mouth.
"It looks delicious. There's nothing better than human flesh," one said.
Then Conny transformed into something strange. It looked like a water tank. I had no idea.
"Damn! And only a tiny fingertip?" one of them exclaimed.
"You idiot. This is a precious commodity. Someone like us can only dream of it. The human flesh from this plantation is only available to the rich as a luxury item," said the other.
"Mother..." Emma whispered, quieter than ever before.
"Perfect," Norman agreed.
"How's the Gupna going?"
"Almost complete."
"Another six-year-old... Lately, we've only been shipping mediocre ones. But soon we'll be able to harvest the top quality. Isn't that right, Isabella?"
Mother? What was she doing with the monsters here?! She knows something about everything. Were all the people from the orphanage who were brought here killed?! Is our orphanage actually a plantation?! And are we meant to be harvested?! I'm so scared. And Mother is our enemy.
"Yes," Mother confirmed.
"Make sure we can ship these four with the best performance."
"Understood."
"Wait, I smell something."
Norman grabbed me and Emma. Together we fled faster than ever, unnoticed, back to Grace Field House. I still couldn't believe all of this. Norman and Emma stopped, but I couldn't. I rushed into Ray's arms at the orphanage. There, I cried until I finally broke down.
"Ray... did you know? Did you intend it because of that?" I asked Ray, tears streaming down my face, but then I stopped myself. He looked at me sadly and finally nodded.
"But you can't tell anyone yet. I'm only doing all of this for you. We need to escape from here!" he said, embracing me. I nodded against his shoulder.
After I had cried out, I looked at Ray.
"So, we're not orphans, but rather food for the monsters. And Grace Field House is a plantation. And little by little, we're being harvested. Right?" I asked again.
"Right. I'm so sorry. But still, I've been planning everything for 6 years. It can't fail now. I assume you want to break out too?" he said.
"Of course I want to break out!" it burst out of me. Ray nodded.
"We should go to sleep. Please don't tell Norman and Emma. Let's keep this between us. Good night," he said before leaving. He left me alone in the cold room. I was still scared. The monsters that killed Conny wanted us to be next. One thing was certain: we needed a solid plan to escape. But we also had to take the other children with us. I couldn't just leave them behind.
Norman and Emma entered the room. Emma looked utterly defeated. So did Norman. Emma sat down beside me, hugging her knees.
"Did we... just exist to be eaten?" Emma asked.
"We need to leave, Emma, Ayame. Get away from here," said Norman.
"We can do it, for sure," I said.
"The four of us together," said Norman.
"No, that's not possible," said Emma.
"We can't abandon the little ones. It would be their death sentence," I said. Emma started crying again.
"I don't want any more of us to die," she said. I nodded.
Norman grabbed both of us by the shoulders and said, "We can do it. Don't worry. We just have to stick together."
"But how?" Emma wondered aloud.
"Emma, even though we're children, we have to try. Even if those monsters are lurking outside," I tried to bolster them.
"We need a strategy. Like trapping," she suggested. I nodded. She was absolutely right. We had to come up with a plan. When I thought of Ray's words, perhaps he already had a plan. We had to hope. We had to escape, and importantly, we couldn't leave anyone behind.
Norman agreed with Emma. Together, we regained our courage. We would find a way to get out of here alive.
"Norman... Emma..."
"Hm?" they both responded.
"We have a problem."
"What?" asked Emma.
"Where's Little Bernie?" I said after noticing that Emma and Norman had come in without the stuffed animal.
"Oh no," said Emma.
Norman went even paler than usual. We had left the toy under the car. Oh, crap. If Mother finds it, she'll surely suspect us and keep a closer eye on us. But we had to face it now.
Norman left the room. Emma and I got ready for bed and went to sleep.
