This chapter begins a decade ago, Lucian only fourteen years old when he was dragged into the worlds hidden in plain sight.
Lucian awoke in a rush, glancing over at his alarm clock.
"Crap. Oh crap." He cursed. He quickly rushed over and pulled on the clothes he left out the night before, slipping his phone into his pocket. He sprinted down the stairs, jumping over the side of the banister and running into the kitchen.
"Careful there! God one of these days you're gonna break something." A woman's voice called from the kitchen.
"Sorry mum, I overslept, and I've gotta get to the school in like, 20 minutes." He grabbed a slice of bread from the side, holding it in his mouth as he pulled on socks and shoes. He grabbed his jacket, hastily pulling it over himself, grabbing his bag. He opened the door and rushed out, eating the slice of bread as he jogged down the road. His feet barely touched the ground as he finished up eating. He grabbed a drink out of his bag, swallowing a mouthful and turning the jog into a full-on sprint. He pulled out his phone and checked the time. 5 minutes left. He kept momentum, rushing straight towards the gate. A teacher was waiting, arms crossed.
"Miss I'm sorry but I overslept, I've had a lot of homework I needed to catch up on and-" Lucian was quickly interrupted.
"8:29. You're good for today, Mr Darkmore, but try and be a bit tidier next time. You look like you've ran a marathon through a hedge." The teacher smiled, letting him past. He pulled a hairbrush out of his bag, brushing his shoulder-length hair as he walked to class. He sat at the back of the class as usual, getting the usual glances as he sat down.
"Another boring day..." Lucian muttered to himself, unaware of the hell to come.Roughly two hours had passed, and Lucian was standing outside of his locker, rummaging through it. He got a tap on the shoulder and turned around.
"When do you not look like shit... Honestly, I'm starting to believe you can't look presentable." a familiar face smiled. She was dressed in a light pink jumper, a black skirt and thigh-high socks.
"When are you not teasing me, Ava?" Lucian grinned, hugging her.
"You raise a fair point, but honestly, I can't remember the time you didn't look like a vampire." She sighed, brushing him off.
"Part of my charm I guess..." he smiled.
"I wish I was as naive as you. I've been here longer and tried to fit in, and yet you just... You don't care. It's adorable and delusional." Ava laughed. A group of boys walked past, same age as Lucian, smirking and laughing
"Look everyone! It's the gay boy and the weirdo!" They jeered. Heads turned towards the two, laughing at them. Lucian's hands begun to ball into a fist. Ava held a hand to his chest as he began to step forwards.
"Ignore them. Let them joke, one day you'll get back at them, but not now... please." she softly whispered, looking around at all the people. Lucian deeply sighed, trying to relax. A teacher walked down the hall, and everyone went back to what they were doing.
Ava brought Lucian to the side, smiling.
"Why do they always pick on me, or you, or both of us..." he sighed.
"Well, they think I'm weird because I hang around with you, and you're different." Ava frowned, looking down.
"You're not weird for looking out for me, I don't fit in anywhere else, and I get along with you because you're an outcast too..." He huffed.
"Thanks for that..." Ava smirked as Lucian began to panic.
"No, I didn't mean it like that I just meant that you-" He blurted, before being interrupted.
"I'm kidding. Now get to class, don't get in trouble because of me." she laughed, watching Lucian run off. She checked a message on her phone, her face falling instantly.
A few more hours had passed, the bell ringing for lunchbreak. Lucian darted out of the classroom, squeezing through the crowd to get outside. He ran around the corner, hidden away from everyone to meet Ava when he froze. One of the boys in Ava's class had her pinned up again the fence, tears streaming down her face as she begged him to let go. Lucian felt a fire burning in his chest, a strength hidden deep down as he began to walk towards them.
"LET HER GO RIGHT NOW! I SWEAR TO GOD LET HER GO RIGHT NOW OR ELSE." He snarled; eyes locked onto the boy. The boy scoffed and ignored Lucian, and that's when he snapped. He ran straight at the boy, tackling him. The boy's head hit the floor hard, Lucian standing over him. He knelt and started punching his face hard. The skin on the boy's cheek broke against Lucian's fist. Ava was frozen in fear and shock, unable to move, watching Lucian's anger overtake him.
"I'LL NEVER LET YOU NEAR HER AGAIN YOU HEAR ME?" His voice echoed, causing a crowd to appear. Lucian held his fist tight, his breathing heavy. Blood dripped from his knuckles, the boy's face was bloody and bruised, almost unrecognizable. Ava stood next to him, holding his hand. Lucian flinched, looking at her.
"It's over... I'm okay..." She stuttered, her hand shaking.
"D-did he actually manage to..." Lucian couldn't finish that sentence, a sigh of relief escaping his lips when she shook her head. The two walked away, the crowd parting to let them through.
The first domino had fallen.
