The next day Lucian was pulled into a meeting, his mother sat next to him, Ava standing in the corner.
"Lucian, you really hurt him. He had to get stitches." The headmaster sighed.
"He was trying to rape Ava, should I have just let him?" Lucian snapped, the headmaster leaning back.
"Of course not. But at the same time, Ava's a year above you, so was Norman. I don't even understand how you managed to overpower him, let alone cause the damage you did." The headmaster frowned, looking confused.
"I don't know either, I just... Got so angry, like the strength just appeared..." Lucian sighed. His mother looked down, pausing for a moment.
"We can arrange some therapy for Lucian? To try and control his anger, I mean he's always been shy and confident at the same time..." His mum offered, causing Lucian to turn his head.
"You think I'm crazy now is that it?" Lucian raised his voice, still clearly shook up by what happened earlier. Ava stepped forwards and held out a hand.
"Nobody is saying you're crazy Luci... And I don't think you should feel guilty for helping me... or anyone in that case. But at the same time, you could've killed him..." She rubbed her thumb against his, smiling.
"I didn't want to... I just wanted him to stop..." Lucian's voice cracked.
"It's clear he was only trying to help. But I'd get on that therapy if I were you." The headmaster turned to his mother, sighing.
"Thank you, sir... We will." She turned and left the room, getting Lucian to follow her. Ava smiled and waved, letting him go.
Lucian walked his mother back to the school gates, a smile on her face.
"I'm so proud of you... That look in her eyes, you really saved her. Even though I think she was a bit scared seeing you that angry." she offered comfort.
"I still can't explain how I managed to overpower him... I'm skinny and he was older than me and I'm pretty sure he does boxing..." Lucian sighed, trying to wrap his brain around it.
"You come from a long line of protectors. Maybe they all reached out to help you?" his mother had a slight smirk on her face, knowing what her son's reaction would be.
"Not the witch talk again mum... Everyone will think you're crazy..." he protested.
"Fine, not now anyways. We'll talk about it at home after the meeting I have tonight." she kissed his forehead.
"Alright, I'll stay out of more trouble. I'm sorry for all of that..." Lucian hung his head as his mother walked out of the school gates.
"It wasn't that bad. But 'Luci' huh?" his mother asked, reminding him of what Ava said.
"Don't start now, I'll see you tonight." Lucian smiled, walking back into the school grounds.
Class had continued as normal, getting the usual glances, but this time they seemed more apprehensive than teasing. At the end of school, Lucian ran outside, off to his usual meeting point with Ava. He got round the corner and froze. His bottom lip quivered, his legs buckling.
"No, no god no please..." He ran forwards, Ava lying on the ground. There was a deep slash on her throat, blood soaking her jumper and staining the grass. Tears flowed from his eyes as he cradled her body, screaming out in anger, pain and grief. His body was shaking, struggling to process what happened. He held her head, trying to force her to look at him, but it was too late. Her eyes were cold. All the joy, all the smiles, all her memories were gone. She was an empty shell. Lucian was frozen, unable to move. All he could do was hold her and cry.
