Ayla follows behind Otis as Shane leads the trio up a grassy hill beside the high school. She has a massive rucksack on her back to store supplies in and Shane has given her a large hunting knife which she strapped onto her belt. However, that is her only weapon apart from her small switchblade as Shane refused to give her a gun. This decision makes the pit of worry in her stomach become so much larger, and she'll soon come to understand why.
Upon reaching the top of the hill, the trio hide behind a cop car and take a look at their situation. The courtyard of the school is filled with walkers. They wander about aimlessly, pacing back and forth, their groans echoing throughout the night sky. Ayla can see a look of worry cross Shane's face before he quickly masks it.
"You see that big mobile medical trailer across that way?" Otis asks between deep breathes.
Shane and Ayla both peer over the edge of the car and locate it to be on the opposite side of the courtyard, meaning they will have to pass by all the walkers to get to it. Great.
"We need to get over there?!" She whispers forcefully.
Otis nods and all three of them sigh.
The next ten or so minutes is spent discussing a plan. Shane ends up suggesting they try and open the boot of the cop car that they are hiding behind as usually they contain flares in them as protocol. This leads to Shane creeping around the side of the car and unlocking the drivers door which allows Ayla and Otis to search in the boot for the flares which are right where Shane said they would be.
Shane and Otis throw them in the opposite direction of the medical trailer and when the walkers are distracted, the three of them run over to the trailer as quickly and quietly as possible. The whole situation is making Ayla's heart beat a million miles an hour and to be honest, she'd probably rather be anywhere else in the world right now. The only thing that's keeping her going is that she's doing this for Carl.
They make it to the trailer without the walkers noticing them and they all slide through the door without fault. They immediately begin stuffing their bags until they're filled to the brim with everything Hershel needs - Otis having to point out what a few things look like to Shane - and then soon enough, their bags are full and they're ready to leave. They make their way to the trailer door and Shane opens it slowly.
The walkers are no longer distracted.
Instead, they are all scattered across the courtyard again and with the noise of the door opening, their new distraction becomes Ayla, Otis, and Shane.
