Magic in the Air

Part Two
The Tale of Men
Men are all cruel and evil
In the land where magics lie
Even if the beasts could talk and beg
Their life was nothing to men under the sky.
The Earth-child was long gone
Disappearing into the depths of hell;
Men were left to fend for themselves
And fend for themselves they did well.
Thinking only of themselves
Forests and animals they did kill
Justifying themselves with their own words
The land was angry with the hurt.
But even so the Fairies
Protected the men in their sleep
And the Giants and the Golems
Fought away the much viler creatures of the deep.
Over a hundred years did the men stay foolish
Oblivious to what they did wrong
Whatever they thought they were doing
They thought they all would hold strong.
"United we stand!" one said.
"Divided we fall!"
And yet they were already divided
Even as their destinies were stalled.
War came easily
Brother against man.
Cold tongues of steel did the talking
As only the fierce men can.
The Men killed each other
Like beasts fighting over little things
For there was only a misunderstanding
Which the men used to cause fighting
A King, they said, would unite them
And that King had not yet come.
But in the Men's hearts they knew
No King would make them stand as one.
No animal fought among their type
Only men and their wars
Even the wolves looked on in surprise
And the tigers watched in awe.
Soon one side overwhelmed the other
And many, many 'heroes' were slain
The wolves themselves shook their heads
But the men did not have them as they lay.
What was the use of a head if not to think?
The beasts sighed among themselves
And after that they left the men to their battles
To seek better grounds to delve.
Men soon stopped their fighting;
A great number were dead
Those who were alive realized their mistake
But only with a feeling of dread.
No spell or magic could bring back their brethren
The Earth-child of long ago was long gone
So the men decided to live in peace
But for men that was a promise too wrong.
As the men grew in age and their sons replaced them
They remembered their age-old feud
And thus the men picked up their weapons
To do battle with one another to the loot.
Dragons themselves came to see
The battles of men as far as the Sea
The great creatures were ones of peace
So they left the men alone
But yet the men fought on
To every last man, flesh and bone.
Men fight long and hard
Their scars show enough
But now we must give our attention
To the Giants and Golems in the North.
