   The creaky floorboards of Will's house were loud as Mike walked through the halls. Mike felt particularly lost in thought today. He knew this was the worst time for this, but he couldn't help it. Chatter filled the room as bodies moved quickly around Mike, no one even seeming to notice he was just standing there.

   Mike heard a thump as cardboard hit cardboard, and he looked up to see Will tossing a box labeled "Dungeons and Dragons" into the donations box.

   "Hey, hey, that's the donation box!!" Mike called to Will as he was walking away

   "I know. I can just use your set when I come back." Will said, smiling slightly

   "But...what if you wanna join another party?"

   "Not possible." Will smiled wide, and Mike exchanged the favor gladly. They stood there for a second, just smiling.

   Mike felt his face get hot, and Will, also turning red, walked away. This wasn't the first time something like this had happened to Mike, and it was driving him insane. He didn't understand why he got so flushed and hot when he was around Will. Why he wanted to spend all his time with him, even over his own girlfriend. This feeling was familiar and unfamiliar all at once and it made Mike feel like he was going crazy. He had been feeling it for as long he could remember, but he still didn't have a name for it. It scared him.

   "Mike?" Mike was jolted out of his thoughts by his girlfriend's voice

   "Y-yeah?"

   "Remember that day? At the cabin? When you were talking to Max?"

   "Um..." Mike felt kind of bad that he had no idea what she was talking about "I don't think I follow..."

   "Y-you talked about your feelings. Your heart."

   "Oh. OH. Y-yeah. I-I...god it was so long ago, I don't even remember what I said exactly" Mike knew exactly what he said

   "Mike." El walked closer to him and cupped his face in her hand

   Panic jolted through Mike. He shouldn't feel so upset about this. El was his girlfriend. Then El mumbled the words he had dreaded she would.

"I love you too." she pressed her lips against Mike's and kissed him lovingly

   But Mike couldn't bring himself to kiss her back. He stiffened up and just watched her kiss him. Her hands were on his face and his were at his side. The first feeling he was able to recognize seeped in. Disgust.

   He patiently waited for her to finish, and when she pulled away, he wasn't sure if he'd be able to keep the scowl off of his face. El looked at him with a sad smile and left the room.

   Mike hated this feeling. This was how he always felt when El kissed him and he just couldn't shake it. She's his girlfriend for god's sake, why can't he kiss her without it feeling wrong?

Mike stood there, feeling ashamed, and yet again was pulled out of his thoughts by Will. He popped his head into the doorway, and said,

"We're leaving."

   Mike felt crushed. He walked out into the driveway where everyone was hugging and saying their goodbyes. The minute Dustin let go of Will, Mike took his place, wrapping his arms around Will and squeezing him tight. Will hugged back, and Mike suddenly got the urge to kiss him and never let go. At that, he quickly pulled apart from Will, feeling disgusted in himself. He stared at the floor and could tell Will felt hurt, but Mike was too busy feeling pathetic to apologize.

   Will walked away and got into the car with the rest of his family, and Mike watched as they drove away. Will was being taken away from him. His Will. Suddenly it felt like a part of him had been taken away. He felt a deep sense of longing in his chest, and suddenly everything seemed to click into place. It all made sense. That's when he realized.

   Mike Wheeler is in love with Will Byers.
