"Get decent sweetie we need to talk" Sheriff Peterkin told John B. "Is your sister around" she asked. "She needs to hear this" she said, and John B sat up.
"Adi get in here" John B said and Adeline made her way in the living room.
She saw Sheriff Peterkin before going to John B who got off the couch. "Sorry to break in like this but DCS called they wanted me to check on you see how you're doing" Sheriff Peterkin said.
"So how are you besides the" Sheriff Peterkin asked and motioned to his eye.
"Oh no I'm great yeah fantastic uh thanks for coming by" John B said. "And you Adeline" Sheriff Peterkin asked her.
"I'm great the best actually" Adeline said. "I'm so glad to hear you both say that but I heard a few things that worried me let me see if I can remember" Sheriff Peterkin said.
"Oh yeah one of the things I heard was that your uncle Teddy your guardian hasn't been in the state for three months" Sheriff Peterkin said.
"Yeah, that's false" John B said. "You've had to have heard wrong" Adeline added.
"You don't have to say anything I know it's true I called the school they said you used to be a good student but now you're failing all your classes and that your sister is the only one doing good in school" Sheriff Peterkin said.
"No, no I'm only failing one and its history he's a jerk he's out for me" John B said. "I heard there was a fight on the beach yesterday and a gun was involved" Sheriff Peterkin said.
"Okay gun no way" Adeline said. "Did I get in a dustub yes but was there a gun no, no way" John B said.
"That's okay I know who it was I'll get to him all I'm worried about right now is making sure you and your sister are in a safe home" Sheriff Peterkin said.
"Yeah, super safe super sound sturdy you know what I mean" John B said tapping the table.
"Can't get any safer than this" Adeline said. "And Uncle T is coming back so" John B said. "That what he told you" Sheriff Peterkin asked.
"Yeah" John B said. "Well, if he really is coming home, I think you should be allowed to stay" Sheriff Peterkin said. "Thank you" John B said.
"But if I stick my neck out for you you have to help me tit for tat" Sheriff Peterkin said.
"And how can we help you" Adeline asked. "Let me see, how can you help me oh I know so a body was found in the marsh yesterday" Sheriff Peterkin said.
"Were you in the marsh yesterday" Sheriff Peterkin asked. "Yeah, we were fishing for some drum" John B said.
"You catch anything" Sheriff Peterkin asked. "Not a thing" Adeline said.
"We were skunked" John B added. "Strange fishing's usually good after a storm all sorts of things get stirred up" Sheriff Peterkin said.
"You come across a wreck yesterday" Sheriff Peterkin asked.
"No" John B said, and Sheriff Peterkin sighed. "You, skimming just above the surface John B now down here is foster care, juvie pretty big drop for a smart kid like you" Sheriff Peterkin said as she lowered her hand.
"Up here is you, your sister, and your little friends doing whatever you want Outer banks" Sheriff Peterkin said as she put her hand at her face.
"Or foster care on the mainland where you risk getting separated from your sister" Sheriff Peterkin said dropping her hand and John B sat down with Adeline sitting beside him.
"You one inch above the surface John B if I was you, I'd start flapping my wings" Sheriff Peterkin said.
"Now you sure you didn't come across a wreck yesterday" Sheriff Peterkin asked. "Yeah, yeah I'm sure" John B said.
