I have always known I was magical ever since I was a little girl. I am eighteen now, and still haven't gotten my powers, but it's fine, everything is fine. It doesn't matter that I still can't perform a single spell, and brew a simple potion, or even do a charm, or hex or literally anything magic related at all. I am no better than a mere mortal, and in my family that is a very big problem. As a female in my family I am supposed to get my powers when I meet my soulmate but when some of them have found their soulmates at five or six you start to lose hope, and with my rotten luck I will never meet my soulmate, and get my powers. I have no idea what a hopefully soon to be young witch is to do.

''Poppy please help your mother brew this potion!'' My father screams from downstairs.

''You know I have no idea how to do that!'' I scream right back.

''Just come down and help her please!'' My father says still screaming from some annoying reason.

I roll my bright emerald green eyes, quickly run a brush through my long frizzy midnight black hair, and very reluctantly trudge down the stairs.

''What kind of potion is it?'' I ask walking into the bright yellow kitchen where both my parent's, two of my aunt's, and even my two older sister's were congregating.

''A healing potion'' my mother says smiling the sweet smile only she can pull off. If I tried to smile like her it would come off more like a grimace.

''Who are we trying to heal?'' I ask hesitantly. My mother was always healing or helping someone, and I just wasn't good at that, at all.

''Maria from down the street, she fell down the stairs again'' my mother says still smiling her signature sweet smile.

''She is so clumsy'' I say rolling my eyes, and trying to squeeze in between my mother, my aunt Sybil, my other aunt Millie, my older sister Tabitha, and other older sister Thea to absolutely no avail.

''Be nice Poppy'' my mother scolds me, and continues to meticulously work on the healing potion. My mother's magic is sweet, and good, she is a light witch, and practices white magic so does my sister Thea, and my aunt Millie.

''It's not like she can hear me'' I say rolling my eyes yet again.

''What is Poppy even doing down here? She isn't even magical!!'' My sister Tabitha says scowling.

Tabitha is a dark witch, and practices black magic so does my aunt Sybil.

''Be nice Tabitha'' my mother says still working on her potion.

''Poppy will get her powers soon I can feel it, and she will meet her soulmate'' my mother says smiling her signature sweet smile yet again. She was always getting ''feelings'' or ''premonitions'', and she was always right.

''I wish I could help you ladies'' my father says smiling his signature goofy smile. My father is a mortal so it is entirely possible I could be a useless mortal too.

''You are doing enough sweetie'' my mother says kissing him right on the lips in front of everyone in the kitchen. They are still so in love after twenty six years, and three kids. My father then leaves probably to watch sports, or tinker in the garage like he loves to do.

''I think Poppy is a useless mortal who will never get her powers, and will be alone forever'' Tabitha says smirking evilly just as the potion turns a scary black color.

''Tabitha you ruined the potion!!'' Thea says furiously.

''You have done enough Tabitha'' my mother says patiently as she calmly pours her ruined healing potion down the sink drain.

''Whatever'' Tabitha says rolling her sea green eyes, and leaves the room probably to practice black magic, and cause mischief. I immediately take her place in the brewing circle as my mother gets the ingredients to make a new potion batch.

''I am handing you all the ingredients Poppy, and I want you to put them in the potion exactly how, and when I tell you to'' my mother says with a very scary serious expression on her face.

''Do you really think it is wise mother to trust Poppy with such responsibility??'' Thea says also with a scary serious expression on her face.

''Of course, how else will she learn how to brew a proper potion when she does end up getting her powers?'' My mother says still with a serious expression, and I was getting very scared very fast.

''Umm mother I don't know if I feel comfortable being entrusted with such responsibility'' I say as my mother waves off all my protests.

''Oh nonsense sweetie you will do wonderful!'' My mother says just as I feel my hands slip, and I accidentally drop every single ingredient for the potion on the spotless kitchen floor, they all drop with an ear splitting shatter.

''I am so so sorry mother I really am!!'' I scream in sheer panic as I drop to the floor, and try to pick up the broken glass with my hands, and wipe up all the ingredients as quickly as possible.

''Poppy please stop'' my mother says gently putting a hand on my shoulder.

''I am so sorry I keep messing things up, I will never be good enough ever'' I say as I feel the tears start to well in my eyes, and I run out of the kitchen full on crying as I go.

I immediately run outside the house, and just sit outside on the giant porch on the porch swing just staring at the typical suburban street that I live on. There are birds chirping, kids playing loudly in the street, a man mowing his lawn, everything is so normal but nothing feels normal in my life because I am so normal, and my family so isn't. All I have ever wanted ever since I was a little girl is to develop my powers, and they never ever came. I am going to be normal forever, a useless mortal, just like my father just as a big moving truck pulls into the abandoned house next door, and I know from that moment somehow that my life is about to change forever.
