Chapter Four
After I I hid the scent blocker in my room, I went to the event space. I already let both girls into my room through the small window. Thankfully my friends are tiny and agile and not wide hipped like me. I would never have made the squeeze. My room was basically a storage closet so I doubt it took them long.
The party was in less than a half hour. I ran around like a chicken with its head cut off, doing various tasks for the coordinator. Hang these balloons, run this to the freezer, help this person, that person, and so much more. But it's almost time. I go to the kitchen to prepare the serving platters. The alphas haven't shown up yet. They probably won't until an hour or so into the party. Fashionably late and all of that. I was glad though. The longer they were away, the less time they had to figure out the truth.
I line up the serving platters for all of the wait staff, ready to be taken to the party. I take a deep breath in, readying myself. I have one main target. And if he isn't willing, I'll find another. Or hope my girls are more successful. I trust them, but I definitely don't trust any alphas or betas. Hell, even gammas. Any one in charge is immediately a red flag for me. I take another breath. My daddy and mommy issues are irrelevant. I need to focus on escape. I grab one of the trays and make my way to the ballroom, ready to serve the early party goers. The first faces I see are Charlotte and then Ava on opposite ends of the room. They both give a brief thumbs up, then go back to looking around the room, waiting for their targets.
It takes about thirty minutes for the party to hit in full swing. Alpha Cade showed up with his beta fifteen minutes ago, but I let him settle in first. I also was quietly hyping myself up to flirting. I count to ten and walk over to the wall where the Alpha of the Rock Falls pack is now leaning against alone, observing the party. As I get closer, I nearly lose my nerve and walk past him, but then his eyes move up to mine. They are non-threatening and vaguely disinterested. Okay, I can work with that.
"Champagne, Alpha?" I ask, holding out the tray.
"Am I allowed to take the whole tray?" He retorts, arching a brow.
"Well, that is entirely your decision." I wink. "Parties not your cup of tea"
"They are just fine, boring, but fine." he laughs.
"Well you could be stuck working them." I roll my eyes, then realize my mistake. That was not flirting, Rachel!
"Hm right indeed. How did you get the honor of working the fine event?"
Okay, it worked fine enough.Still on a roll. "I work for the Alphas, for now." I reply casually.
"For now?"
"The goal is to get out. One day."
"Who sounds bored now?" He laughs again.
"Oh, still you for sure. I am not bored, per say. I am ready for something... new. Different. New people. New experiences." I shift on my toes a little and notice him glance down at my chest. Good. I take a step towards home, shifting the tray to my hip.
"And where would you go, adventurous wolf?"
"Any pack that'll take me." I shrug, hoping I don't seem desperate.
"Any? Haven't found a single one interested? Are you a murderer or outcast?" He chuckles yet again, unknowingly striking a nerve.
"Hmm. Not an outcast exactly, more like an outsider here. I want a place to really be, you know? Explore. Try some new things. I am a new adult and there is plenty to try." I raise my eyebrows suggestively.
"That there is, little wolf. Tell you what, I'm in town for the night. I'm staying at the Wayside" I do my best to hide my surprise at him telling me about his hotel, not surprised that it is the best in the pack. "Come by in the morning, and we can grab coffee and discuss an arrangement. If you are really up for adventure" He leans into my ear. "You can meet me there tonight after your shif" He nibbles it gently "No pressure, of course, little wolf. Either way we will have coffee in the morning. It's up to you if you want to be clothed or not" He pulls away smiling. Oh, he definitely gets around.
"I'll keep that in mind." I say breathlessly. I'm sure my face is flushed. "I look forward to seeing you again." I keep it vague and saunter away, hoping I don't look as weird as I feel.
After walking into the kitchen, I glance around to make sure no one is looking as I pull my phone out of my bra. While we could use a link, it was too risky. If one of us were in conversation, it could throw them off or worse, cause questions if someone noticed. I shoot of a text in summary.
Me: Score. Kind of. I can either meet him *tonight* at his hotel room or just in the morning for coffee, to discuss an arrangement.
Charlotte: Get it girl! I say tonight for sure ;)
Ava: Not in a suggestive way like miss horndog over here but wouldn't be a bad plan. You wouldn't need to worry about the Alphas tonight
Hm. Wasn't a bad idea, but I'd have to think about it. Then I get another buzz.
Ava: We are going to keep working our angles as back up. You focus on not getting in trouble. Love you <3
Me: <3333
I tuck the phone back into my bra and go to grab a new serving tray. Before I walk back to the party, I smell them. It's light, they must have just walked in. But it is there. Now we find out how effective the plan is. If it's not they will be here any second. I wait. Nothing. I pause in the kitchen for five more minutes, and when nothing changes, I let out the breath I didn't realize I was holding then head back to work.
I immediately notice a swarm of girls around each of the alphas, giving birthday wishes and pushing their breasts towards them. I scoff. There is still that feeling telling me to push the girls away, but for the most part, they can have them. I look toward Alpha Cade at the other end of the room. We make eye contact and I flush. I may never be truly mated, but I could have fun at my new pack. I bet Cade isn't the only hot single in the pack.
As I continue serving various guests around the ballroom, I notice the crowds around the Alphas shift. I watch as Alpha Xavier breaks from the group and walks towards the large staircase with a girl on each arm. I wonder if my smell in their room had dissipated before they got there, they hadn't been to their rooms yet, or they didn't care about their mate. I couldn't decide which scenario was worse.
I know it's none of my business. I've all but rejected them. I plan to move packs, sleep with other men, I have no right to feel upset. But I still get a nagging nausea in my gut that I don't have time for. I shake my head and hand a glass of champagne to a couple standing closer to the dance floor.
A yell roars from upstairs. I freeze. Everyone freezes. Alpha Dominic and Alpha Colton break from the group of girls. "Everyone stays. Do not move." The former proclaims and then the two jog up the stairs. A pit forms in my stomach, and I am praying it isn't about me, well, their mate. If he is getting to his room for the first time, it can't be good. It's horrible timing considering he was just planning on a threesome, and he has to be pissed.
It felt like we all were standing still and silent for hours, but in reality, it was a couple minutes. All three alphas appear on the stair balcony with grim expressions.
"It seems someone has decided to give us a birthday treat. A bit of a hunt." Alpha Xavier sneers. Shit. "Our mate is here." Well, he can't know that for sure, my smell lingered from hours previously. However, most of the pack is here now so I am not surprised by the assumption.
"In response" Alpha Dominic picks up. "Every unmated female is to report to the center of the ball room. Staff or guest. Regardless of pack identity. Now." Well, double shit.
