Chad's POV:
I was pacing around my common room, processing the information Harry, Ron, and Hermione told me and the others. The Sorcerer's Stone? A professor attempting to steal it? Lord Voldemort returning to power?
I shudder at the thought. I never told this to anyone except Jake, Alexander, and Joshua, but my parents used to be Death Eaters before Harry Potter defeated him. It's a good thing he did, because I would never want my parents to become Death Eaters again. Especially because my dad might make me join them once I'm old enough.
Putting all these dark thoughts away, I realise that while I was walking, I dropped my good luck pen near one of the Hogwarts towers! Quickly scurrying out of my common room, I dart towards where I might have dropped it. I cannot lose that pen! It helped me in all my exams before, and there is another reason it's so special to me...
As I run, I notice how dark it is outside. Damn it, it must be after hours. If I'm caught, I'm screwed, but I need that pen!
The climb all the way up the stairs was no easy task, but I eventually reached the top, panting furiously. However, when I turn my head, I see blue and bronze colours everywhere. Oh, I must be near Ravenclaw tower. And I see someone walking towards me.
It looks like a student, I'm guessing a prefect, and if they find me God knows what'll happen. If they tell Filch, he's gonna take me straight to Professor McGonagall!
I see a knight of armour and hide behind it, praying the prefect would pass. But they don't. Instead, they come into view, and I realise that I've been scared for nothing. It was just Alex.
"Alex!" I exclaim quietly, causing the boy to jump. "God, I'm so glad it's you! You scared me so bad!"
"I scared you?" he asks incredulously. "Anyways, what are you doing out of your common room after dark?"
"I lost my lucky pen!" I speak.
"Of course you did," he sighs. "Which is why you choosing to sneak out in the middle of the night and roam around the castle?"
"Exactly! Now let's go before someone else finds it!"
I drag Alex along with me near the tallest tower in Hogwarts. It's the only place I could've dropped it, so I have to check there. Suddenly, a thought comes to my mind.
"Alex?" I ask. "Why were you out after hours?"
"Me? Well, after what those three told us, I couldn't sleep. If you-know-who does get the stone and become immortal, we're all doomed," he says darkly.
"Tell me about it," I reply. "Anyways, moving onto non-scary topics..." I trail off when I hear footsteps around us.
"Uh, Alex," I say nervously. "Do you hear those?"
"Shh!" He grabs me and ducks behind a banner, pulling me with him.
For the second time tonight, I was terrified of being caught. Also, for the second time, the person who I thought was an authoritative figure was just a student. Well, students.
"Come on, Hermione, just up this tower," a famous voice whispers.
"Right, let's go," a girl's voice replies.
"Come on," I whisper to Alex.
We slowly come out from behind the banner, but to our surprise, we don't see anyone around us. Was it all a trap?
"Chad? Alex? What on earth are you doing here?" Harry asks. He removes the cloak he was wearing, and we only see his head. The other parts of his body are... invisible.
"Woah, is that an invisibility cloak?" I ask, amazed.
"How do you know about those?" Hermione asks, appearing beside Harry, also covered by the cloak.
I shrug. "No clue."
"Listen," Harry says drawing us closer. "We need to give this dragon to Ron's older brother at the top of that tower. Now, I don't know why either of you are here, but if you don't mind could you keep watch?"
I hear a crunch at my foot. I look at the ground and see my lucky pen! I immediately picked it up and tucked it under my robes. "Well, I came here to find something, but now that I found it, I'd be glad to keep watch!"
"I wouldn't. That'll mean we'd all be breaking the rules! Imagine if we get caught!"
"Come on, Alex. Please," I plead.
"Fine," he caves. I smile and nod to Harry and Hermione, who nod back and walk up the tower.
"I wonder where they got a dragon from," I wonder aloud.
"With the amount of trouble those three conjure up, I'm not even surprised," Alex chuckles.
"Do you think they could beat us at our own game?" I ask jokingly.
"Hell no. With someone like you in our group, mayhem follows us everywhere we go." Alex smiles, a smile which I return.
"I'm just glad I got my pen back!" I say happily, holding it up. "Although I did sneak out for it and put both of us in a potentially risky situation exposing us to detention, point-deduction, and maybe even suspension."
"And I wonder why chaos is all around us," Alex laughs quietly.
"Me too!" I say.
Alex puts his arm around me as he laughs softly into the night. It felt nice to be here, sneaking out and breaking rules for a silly reason. Mischief always got my blood flowing with adrenaline, even if it took Alex some time to get warmed up to the feeling.
I am snapped out of my thoughts when I hear footsteps growing closer. I assume they belong to someone else we knew, but Alex gives me a serious look, and I intuitively know it isn't. We both duck somewhere out of sight just as Harry and Hermione come down from the tower.
"Run!" I scream at them, but they give me a confused look before staring right at Filch, who appeared in front of them.
"Well, well, well, what do we have here? Students out of bed! Students out of bed!" Filch screams with a broad grin before dragging them along.
I gulp, scared of what will happen to them. Harry gives me a quick glance, nodding to the tower. He must have forgotten the cloak there! The moment Filch takes Harry and Hermione out of sight, I jump out of our hiding place and start towards the tower.
"Chad! What are you doing?" Alex whisper-shouts.
"Harry must have forgotten his cloak up there!" I point to the top of the tower.
"No! No way! You cannot seriously be thinking of getting it, not after they just got caught!"
"Of course I'm gonna get it! We said we would help them, remember?"
"That was for the Sorcerer's Stone, not something like this!"
"Well, I'm gonna go," I say, strangely defiantly.
Alex sighs. "Then I guess I'm coming with you. But you better not get us caught."
I smile brightly and pull him up the stairs with me. We reach the top of the tower and are met with an immensely strong breeze. It ruffled my hair, but all that mattered was retrieving the cloak.
"There it is!" I exclaim, quickly heading towards the place it lay and picking it up.
"Wow, I never thought I would see it in my life," Alex says as his eyes light up. "And it's the real thing too."
"It is," I reply, awestruck.
"Come on, let's get out of here before we get caught."
We raced back to our dormitories, greeting each other good night when the time came to split up. I lay in my bed, adrenaline still coursing through my veins. I was so excited I felt like I couldn't sleep! And I didn't until very late that night.
