Chapter 2:
Renjun’s footsteps echoed through the empty hallway as he rushed toward his next class, desperate to put some distance between himself and Haechan. The air felt stifling, heavy with the lingering tension of their encounter. Renjun’s cheeks were still warm, and his mind replayed Haechan’s teasing words, making him scowl at himself. Why did Haechan always manage to get under his skin like that?
Slipping into his seat by the window, Renjun rested his head against the cool glass, hoping it would calm his racing heart. The room was slowly filling up, students chatting and laughing, but Renjun felt disconnected, lost in his own thoughts. He stared out at the courtyard, trying to focus on anything but the way Haechan’s presence lingered like an uninvited shadow.
“Mind if I join you?” Haechan’s voice cut through Renjun’s solitude, startling him. Renjun turned sharply, eyes widening as Haechan slid into the desk beside him, a cocky grin plastered on his face.
“You—how did you even—” Renjun stammered, his brain short-circuiting at the sight of Haechan this close again.
“Skipped my class. Yours seemed more interesting.” Haechan’s eyes sparkled with mischief as he leaned back in his chair, completely at ease. “Or maybe it’s just the company.”
Renjun’s stomach flipped, irritation bubbling up as he tried to ignore the flutter of nerves that Haechan’s gaze always seemed to ignite. “Can’t you just leave me alone?” Renjun muttered, his voice lacking the conviction he desperately wanted it to have.
“Where’s the fun in that?” Haechan countered, leaning closer, his knee brushing Renjun’s under the desk. Renjun stiffened, the contact sending a shiver up his spine. Haechan always knew how to push his buttons, and the worst part was, Haechan seemed to enjoy it.
Renjun turned his head, attempting to focus on the board at the front of the classroom, but Haechan’s presence was impossible to ignore. The way he sat—relaxed and self-assured, his eyes never leaving Renjun—was maddening. Renjun felt his resolve weakening, his usual defenses crumbling under the intensity of Haechan’s attention.
“What do you want from me, Haechan?” Renjun finally asked, his voice laced with frustration and a touch of genuine curiosity.
Haechan’s smile softened, just a fraction, and for a moment, Renjun thought he saw something sincere behind the playful exterior. “Maybe I just like being around you,” Haechan said, his tone almost serious. “Or maybe I’m waiting for the day you finally admit you don’t hate me as much as you pretend to.”
Renjun’s breath caught, his heart thudding painfully against his chest. He didn’t know how to respond. It was one thing to deal with Haechan’s teasing, but this—this felt different. It felt real, and Renjun didn’t know how to handle it.
“I—I don’t care about you,” Renjun lied, but the words felt hollow, even to him. Haechan raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced.
“Sure you don’t,” Haechan said, his voice low and teasing. He leaned closer, his lips dangerously close to Renjun’s ear, making Renjun’s pulse quicken. “Keep telling yourself that, Renjun.”
Renjun’s mind went blank, the proximity of Haechan’s body heat making it impossible to think straight. He wanted to push Haechan away, to tell him to stop, but his body betrayed him, frozen in place by the overwhelming sensation of Haechan’s closeness.
The bell rang, jolting Renjun out of his daze. He scrambled to gather his things, desperate to escape before he completely lost his composure. But Haechan caught his wrist, holding him back with a firm yet gentle grip.
“Let go,” Renjun said, trying to sound angry, but his voice came out shakier than he intended.
Haechan’s grip loosened, but he didn’t let go entirely. Instead, he looked at Renjun with a gaze that was uncharacteristically soft, almost vulnerable. “I’m not playing with you, you know,” Haechan said quietly, his voice lacking its usual bravado. “I just… I like seeing you like this.”
Renjun’s heart skipped a beat, confusion washing over him. He didn’t know what to make of Haechan’s words, or the way his own chest tightened at the admission. Was it all just another game, another way for Haechan to mess with his head? Or was there something more—something Renjun was too afraid to confront?
Renjun pulled his hand free, the touch lingering like a ghost. “You’re unbelievable,” he muttered, turning on his heel and hurrying out of the classroom before Haechan could see the uncertainty in his eyes.
He walked quickly, his thoughts a whirlwind of mixed emotions. Haechan’s words echoed in his mind, unsettling him in ways he didn’t want to admit. Renjun wanted to believe it was all just part of Haechan’s teasing nature, that none of it meant anything. But the flutter in his chest told a different story, one Renjun wasn’t ready to acknowledge.
As Renjun reached his next class, he slipped into his seat, burying his face in his hands. He needed to get a grip. Haechan was just messing with him—that was all. But no matter how much he tried to convince himself, the warmth of Haechan’s touch and the sincerity in his voice lingered, refusing to be ignored.
Renjun sighed, knowing this was just the beginning. Haechan wasn’t going to let up anytime soon, and Renjun wasn’t sure how much longer he could keep pretending that he didn’t feel something every time Haechan looked at him like that.
Renjun’s resolve was crumbling, and deep down, he knew it was only a matter of time before Haechan’s relentless charm broke through every last wall he had so carefully built.
