A/N: Still thinking about what the plot for this book will be.
Do you have any suggestions for what should happen? I'm open to ideas.=---=
My mind was occupied with thoughts and plans for the future.
But as of now there were three major things I wanted to finish before the day started.
Working during the night would ensure safety and make sure none of the planet's inhabitants accidentally stumbled upon us.
One of the more important tasks on hand was to secure a good food source, or at least a stable one that would supply us with food for at least a month before we get things sorted out and possibly start a small farm.
The other one was less urgent, but still important. Water. We had seen ice coating most things on the ground, so you assumed that there was a large body of water somewhere. Finding it would be tricky though, as snow covered pretty much everything.
Melting down the snow might be a good idea, but we didn't know what the atmosphere contained (cycle of water), and the pollutants in the snow, so that was not a risk Robert and I were willing to take.
The last one was important but we wouldn't need it for a while. Electricity.
We would need that stuff to power machines we would get and use eventually, and we needed to find a source of electricity to power them. A power plant would be ideal, especially one with a nuclear reactor. If you did find a reactor, a fission reactor would be the one you wanted since you wouldn't be able to find fuel for a fusion reactor.
That was all if you could find a reactor.
Coal and natural gas power plants would not really work, as there was no way to get that fuel without... a large workforce.
Reactors were generally low maintenance, and their fuel lasted longer. However, the fuel was even harder to find. It did last significantly longer than coal or natural gas, as each fuel pellet would usually last around 18-24 months. Assuming we were using a PWR reactor, of course.
And thank god RBMK-1000 reactors don't exist anymore, as they would be a pain in the butt to refuel.
Why am I rambling on about reactors again? Electricity was the least of our worries and current issues.
As for the necessities like food, beans and potatoes were probably our best bets as they grew plentifully and were easy to maintain.
"So what's your plan? Where are we going?" Robert asked me, snapping me out of my deep thoughts.
"I wanna see if there's a Lowes or at least a Home Depot where I can snatch some seeds. Most small garden shops might not have survived... the apocalypse, or whatever happened that put this planet in the state it is now," I responded. "Although I highly doubt that those looters were humans... considering the very vague objective of this mission or whatever."
Robert stood there for a bit, absorbing the information. "Alright. I'm going to patrol the area for a bit before we go to make sure no one is trying to steal our stuff," Robert went inside the spacecraft and grabbed the foldable shovel and the gun for defense before leaving.
I turned back to the fire and tossed the empty ration bag into the blaze. I rinsed the fork off with some of my water, and tried to put it away in my pocket.
There was a cast iron pipe in my pocket preventing anything from fitting in. Ohhhh, that's right. I was still in my prisoner outfit. Whoops. I got up and went inside the spacecraft, closing the hatch behind me. I dug around the storage containers until I found my normal clothes, sitting in a small container.
