I hadn’t gotten any sleep that night. As the rain dumped like buckets of golfballs on my roof. It really was spring wasn’t it? I slept like a baby without lightning, but since it was already flashing before six, I hadn’t been able to get a full hour at once. It. Was. The. Worst.

I packed all my stuff that morning. It turned out that I had dropped a contact down the sink, my toothbrush fell down the toilet while I was flossing, and my favorite scarf had gotten a stain on it somehow, so I couldn’t wear it either. I went pretty casual today, the weather matching my mood. I didn’t wear my usual flashy sparkles. I just stuck on a grey t-shirt with one of my bright T’s underneath and a gat to go with it. It was a hat I hadn’t worn in a while, but it had been a late 1960’s style. I had a scarf to go with it that I wore instead. I also borrowed my sister’s hair brush. At least I had already used my tooth brush today...that would have been nasty.

I got to lunch not very surprised to see that our table had grown. Damen and Carter were sitting with all of us now. It was just a bit of a squeeze since the tables were supposed to fit eight, not ten. Luckily, none of us were over weight. However, the guys should learn the rule about no elbows on the table. Today’s arrangement was a lot the same, only no I was seated next to Whitney and Damen, because Kyle sat next to Carter. This table was a rectangular one that just kind of folds into the wall. If you’ve ever sat in one of those, ten high schoolers was a lot to squeeze.

I sat down, and found that just opening my milk without normal elbow space was hard. I managed and stuck the straw in it. Scooting my tray forward so I could sit my elbows on the table. I was so hungry because of all my crisis I was late. I didn’t even have time for a banana. I was so excited for lunch only to find that I really liked only two things on the menu. I wasn’t big on the schools hamburger, but I’d manage. Onion rings were a big NO. As for the wrinkled green beans, and the brown apples, or even the dry looking pairs, I was under no circumstances trusting what was in those. The second thing I liked was the cookie, and it didn’t even have any chocolate in it. The food wasn’t always bad, and I wasn’t always picky. I just didn’t like all the stuff they served. I sighed picking up my cookie.

“What’s wrong?” Damen asked, “People usually enjoy their cookies.” I smiled a little, but it didn’t feel that real. It almost felt sarcastic.

“It’s been a long morning. I dropped my toothbrush in the toilet, and I really don’t like this lunch.” He considered that and then said that it could’ve been worse. I shrugged. I knew what he meant, but I still told him I dropped a contact down the sink. He rolled his eyes.

“That’s not what I meant.” He said. I laughed on the inside and smiled telling him that I knew.

“Besides, you don’t really where contacts. Do you?” I nodded my head.

“I wasn’t kidding.” I said taking a bite of my burger.

“Did you have a back-up pair?” he asked me.

“Nope.” I said after swallowing my bite. Then I took the last drink of my milk. When I heard it slurp I tossed it in the garbage from where I sat and made it of the back board.

“Are you far sighted, or near sighted?” Now I was wondering if he actually cared or was studying me.

“I’m near sighted. I can’t see far away,” I said. Then I asked him, “Why are you asking so many questions?” Then he shrugged.

“Just general curiosity.” Damen said. I waited for more, but when he didn’t say anything I finished my burger.

“How was your morning?” I asked. He thought for a second before answering. Was he always thinking?

“It wasn’t bad. I even had a good night’s sleep actually.” He informed me. I was surprised. So, he’d had a good night while I had been tossing and waiting for the flashes to end? That didn’t seem fair.

“I didn’t.” I told him shaking my head. “In fact, it was probably the worst one I’d had all year. I can’t sleep with all the lightening. It flashes right through my window and penetrates the entire room.” I said kind of exasperated. He just kept looking at me for a second. When I raised my eye brows waiting for him to say something, he just shook his head. Suddenly, he didn’t want to share. I just shrugged. Then, the bell rang. I told him bye and I dumped my tray heading to class. I hadn’t even realized that nearly everyone else had left but Piper and Carter still. I thought to myself, And she thought I had a crush? but I was smiling on the inside. Sometimes crushes were healthy.
