I woke up that night. It was raining (of course) and there was lightening flashing through the curtains. I tried to fight the dreary mood away. It was useless. I couldn’t sleep with the light coruscating through my room. I was lying in my bed then I heard something hit my window. I stiffened, then I decided maybe the wind had kicked up debris. I could hear it whistling throughout the house and between cracks. I turned over and put the cover back over my head.
It came again. The sound wasn’t my imagination or paranoia. I went slowly to my window. It was barely open and I felt a breeze coming through my window, hitting my skin through my tank top. I looked outside and there was not a person, or even animal out there. I closed my window and locked it all the way. I turned around and something hit my window so hard that it left a dent. I had seen nothing but a shadow, but I knew that something that small wasn’t simply launched by a storm hard enough to put a chip in my window. I went back to the window.
When I looked this time I saw someone cold, and wet out on my lawn. I opened the door, even in the clothes that Piper was wearing I knew it was her. I ran outside without shoes none the less. What was she doing out here? She could get sick, or somebody else could have found her. It is late at night. I walked a few feet behind her.
“Piper!” I called to get her attention. She turned around. Her make-up was smeared and she looked cold to me. I had goosebumps myself. “What are you doing out here? You need to go home.” I yelled and she shook her head. Her wet hair was flinging droplets from the gesture. Her hair was cut short now, to her chin nearly. I didn’t know this version of Piper.
“I can’t go home!” Piper yelled at me.
“Why not?” I hollered. Piper wiped some water out of her eyes. The back of her hand was covered in makeup.
“Please, you have to help me, Adelina!” When I didn’t answer, muling this over in my head, she said something else. “I don’t have anyone else!” I knew why she was here now. She couldn’t go home. She did something terrible, and she didn’t have anyone else to turn to. That’s the only reason that she was here at all. I knew I had to be strict with her. I turned inside. When I was at the door, I waved my hand for her to come with me. She followed me inside. I had her wait by the door while I grabbed a towel. I came back and she wiped off her face and her feet. Grabbing her shoes to take upstairs, I walked to my room with her following behind.
Piper didn’t say a thank you of any sort. She didn’t even smile at me. I went to the bathroom across the hall from my room. I opened the door and let her go inside. I told her she could wash up. She nodded, never looking at my face. Piper looked like she could cry. I got another towel out for her that was clean. As soon as I shut the door I heard the shower water cut on. She must have been freezing cause when she came out fifteen minutes later, there was steam coming from the shower. She was wrapped in a towel, no makeup, and most of all, no tears.
I got some clothes out for her already. I handed them to her when she stepped into my room and she went back to the bathroom to change. She came out after she brushed her hair and made use of the toothbrush that she had been keeping here. I was in my bed with the covers over me. I pretended I was asleep, facing the opposite direction.
“I’m sorry.” Piper said. I didn’t move. I was too angry with her. How could she apologize for hating my guts? We were best friends for a long time. If anything I should probably apologize for making her hate me, and then change like that. She had no right to change like that though. I never changed. Her feelings towards me just changed her. She hated me for some unknown reason and I ruined my best friend. How could she use me like this though? I had tried already to help her and to ask for he help even, but she refused. Now, only because there is nobody else to help her, she says she is sorry.
I kept my eyes closed. I had already laid a sleeping bag out on the floor and prepared a pillow for her. Piper had spent the night at my house nearly every weekend when we were little kids. Once we made a record of 12 weekends, then her mother made her go with her to a trip to Piper’s grandmother’s house, so it was broken. That was back when we were friends. Who knew that she would change so much?
