James looked at the man in the eyes, slowly raising his hands and showing his palms. "Listen I- I just-" James tried to stutter out, but the man cut him off with a deep laugh. "We ain't gonna hurt ya, boy." he said, walking towards James, his hands nowhere near his revolvers. "What the hell is going on? Who the hell is this guy?" The thoughts kept racing in his mind.
Before he knew it, the man had reached James's position. He leaned in his ear and whispered, "Now you ain't no O'Driscoll, right?" "A what?" James confusingly replied, slowly lowering his hands. The man grabbed James's shoulders with one arm and led him into the camp, where there was a bunch of different individuals. Cowboys, women, Indians, there was even a little boy. "Arthur, my boy, come and show our new friend around. He's gonna be stayin' a while. And Miss Grimshaw, find 'im a place to sleep," The man shouted out.
Another man, presumably this 'Arthur' character, was smoking a cigarette, then tossed it before heading towards James. "Come on." Arthur said with his grizzly voice. James followed Arthur around, letting him explain everything.
In the bustling camp of the Van Der Linde gang, James's heart raced as he caught sight of a woman, her gentle smile and kind eyes captivating him from across the camp. All he could feel was a nervous flutter in his chest. Gathering his courage, James approached her tentatively, his footsteps hesitant against the backdrop of laughter and chatter.
"Um, hi there," James stammered, his voice betraying his nerves as he fumbled for words. The woman looked up from her book, her expression curious yet welcoming. "Oh, hello," she greeted with a soft smile, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "You must be James, right? I'm Mary-Beth," His cheeks flushed crimson as he nodded, feeling a rush of embarrassment at his awkwardness. But as they exchanged pleasantries and shared stories of their pasts, James found himself enchanted by Mary-Beth's easy charm and genuine kindness.
With each passing moment, his admiration for her grew, and he couldn't shake the feeling of warmth blossoming in his chest. As they laughed and talked late into the night, James realized that in Mary-Beth, he had found not only a confidante but perhaps something more—a flicker of hope.
