The eight-three-year-old woman smiled to herself, she's lived a long life, and she believes that she feels so young because she is forever stuck in that moment of finding out her best friend loved her back. She will always be that youthful twenty-three-year-old woman.
"I..." Chaeryeong started, "I have no words, Mrs. Shin. That was legitimately such a beautiful story."
"I know, dear. She lived a hard life, and we loved in secret, but we were alone together and that's all that truly mattered at the end of the day." Joanne stared off, thinking about her lover. Lucy Thomas, 1964, possibly, the most beautiful woman in the world.
"And the child... did she have it?"
"The child... yes. She gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl. We named her Yuna. Yuna Shin Hwang. A girl with splendid features, half white and half Asian though she had gotten almost all of Yeji's genes."
"Is she still with us today?"
"Unfortunately, not, no. She left us back in 2010, lung cancer. But she lived a full life, she did. Her husband died shortly after in the next year to pneumonia and their son lives across the world. I'm not sure he knows I'm staying here."
"And the maid, Lia?"
"Lia... She's in a different home further south. I would have loved for her to have been here, but she couldn't afford to retire here. She is alive and well, we send letters and never seem to mention a visit with one another."
"I'm glad to hear that she's healthy, then. May I ask, what was your final memory with Lucy?" Chaeryeong was no longer writing on her notepad, she was just talking to Joanne. This was natural conversation now.
"My final memory?" Joanne looked up to think. Then she looked slightly down at the black-haired woman, pondering deeply. Back to her moments, she thought back to swaying in the living room of their house in the middle of nowhere. Holding Yuna in her arms with Yeji holding her from behind. They would sway together to the music playing through the good ol' record player.
They made no friends along the way; they could never go into civilization. Not until the turnover of the millennium. But even then, the world still knew Lucy Thomas as a now free murderer.
"Could I let you in on a grand secret, my dear?"
"It'd be an honor to be trusted, Joanne."
Joanne smiled and gestured for one of the nurses to come over. "Would you bring Alessia down? Even if you must wake her up, all she does is nap these days."
"Of course, Mrs. Shin. Could I put in another drink for you and your visitor as well?"
"Pease, thank you."
"Oh... Who is this Alessia? Does she know more about this?" Chaeryeong questioned and Joanne nodded.
"Much more, dear."
