*Seven years ago.*

5 a.m. I hear my alarm clock ringing. I got out of bed and went to brush my teeth. Then I go to my family's private gym. My oldest brother Antonio is waiting for me.

'It's about time.' he says coldly, like always. 'Sorry, I'm late. I couldn't get out of bed.' He looks at me. 'Oh, really, is that the case so?' He isn't happy, I can tell. Oh, Lord, please pray for me.

Like every morning, we go on our run. 2 miles every day. By the end of it, I'm out of breath. 'That's not good.' I look at him. Is he crazy?
'If you're going to run the mafia someday, all this puffing and huffing has got to go.'

'I know, I'm sorry.' I say, looking down. 'Stop saying sorry, you look even more pathetic.' 'Sor- wait, no, forget it.' I say, still looking at the ground. 'And keep your head up. Your last name is Bianchi for a reason. And Bianchis.'

'Never look down.' I say, now looking up at him. God, I hate my life. Why can't I be like my sister? She gets everything that she wants. She gets pampered all the time. And when everybody talks to her, they do it with love and adoration in their eyes.

Why can't they do this to me too? Am I that hard to love? 'Come on, Kiarra. I don't have all day for you!' My brother says, and I run to him. We continue with our workout. It's 7.30 a.m. now. And we're not done yet. After working out, I take a 5-minute shower. And go downstairs to have breakfast.

'Kiarra, what do you want to eat?' My mother asked, not looking up from her computer. 'Umm, I want something sweet.' My brothers all look at me. 'You sure? Sweet things are not healthy, have a smoothie or something. But sweets are a no for you.' My brother Nicholas said.

As always, I listen and obey. Not listening, being disrespectful, lying, and disobeying are a no for me. If I don't listen to my family, I get in big trouble, but my sister never does. Whatever she does, she never gets into trouble. 'Nico, can you get me chocolate pancakes, please?'

My sister asks, her voice squeaky as always. It was clear to everyone that she was the favorite, but I never did anything wrong. Why?
'Of course, bambina.' Nicholas says as he gets the pancake mix from the pantry.
(bambina-baby)

Nicholas starts making the pancakes, and I go to my room. I don't want to eat anymore. I go to my room and lock the door behind me. I go to my bathroom and lock the door there. I slide down the wall and cry. It's not fair. My sister gets whatever she wants. And I don't get anything. All I ever do is train and study.

My sister gets to play, draw, and dance. She never trains. And she is loved by everyone. Nobody talks to me with love. Everyone is cold and rude to me. Why did I deserve this? I never did anything wrong. I hear knocking. I quickly stand up and unlock my door. Then I unlock the other door. And I open it. I see my father.

'Why is your door locked?' He says, raising his eyebrow. 'Um.' I start fluttering. My dad is so scary. He never smiles unless he is talking to my sister Siena. She is his weak spot. 'Stop fluttering! And come with me.' I follow him.

We go to his office, and I sit down. Opposite him, and he starts talking. 'So me and your brothers decided it's time for you to start training for the mafia.' Before he could complete his sentence, I said. 'I don't want to be in the mafia. I don't want to train.' 'WHAT?' He looks at me, pure anger in his voice. All I can see in his eyes is flames.

'You are going to train in the mafia. You don't have a choice. I don't care if you like it or not!' He screams at me. 'Why can't my sister train too?' I yell back. 'Because she is weak. She can't do anything by herself.' He yells.

'But we are the same age. If I can do it, so Siena can do it too!' My voice cracks. My dad sighs. He asked me to come to him. And I do, he makes me look into his eyes, the same cold gaze.

'Look, I know you think everything is unfair, but one day, you'll realize why me, your mom, and brothers push you so much. I don't want you to think that we don't love you. We do. But you have to listen to me. You have to train for the mafia.'

I sighed, but nevertheless, I agreed. I don't have a choice. From then on, my training started. It was tough. Very tough. On more than one occasion, I wanted to give up. But I couldn't. My family taught me everything that I needed to know about the mafia.
