As a child, she lived with her mother, Navi. Navi fell sick summer of X777, much like our main characters experienced. It wasn't until two years after she passed that Gianna's magical powers surfaced. The conditions in which they happened were gruesome.

It was nearing winter of X779 and Gianna was walking 'home,' which was a spot under a bridge in Magnolia. Cruel wizards had spotted her late at night and attempted to take advantage of her. One man gripped her right shoulder tightly, which did end up breaking her shoulder blade. While Gianna's powers kept the men back in the moment pain seeped in, she wasn't strong enough to fight back.
Lucky for her, Laxus and Makarov were still walking back to the hall when they had spotted Gianna's incident. While Laxus didn't even want to intervene, Makarov would never sit by while it happened and quickly jumped in to save her. It was after this happened that Gianna would join Fairy Tail.
This would be where she met Erza, Gray, Natsu, and everyone else. She would probably be the most sane of them in terms of temper, but she was weird enough to call such a place her home.
