mia and liam took their seat at a booth, ordering each a plate of fries and a milkshake - mia cookies and cream and liam vanilla.
the girl sat with her hands underneath her legs, looking out the window of the diner in silence as liam fiddled with the tissue box.
this was extremely awkward... why did he decide to do this while she was still with him? liam did not know anything about this girl, and now he was here at a diner with her, having to try and come up with some sort of conversation.
"so... whether's nice." he said, cringing to himself
mia looked at him, biting the inside of her cheek a little to stop her from smiling "it just started raining..."
"right." liam said, face heating up in slight embarrassment
she managed a small smile and he looked at her for a moment before their food and milkshakes arrived.
mia took her straw out of her milkshake and drizzled the drink remains onto her plate of fries. she glanced up when feeling a pair of eyes on her and noticed liam's expression
"what?" she asked confused
"just... i've never seen that before," liam said, fighting a small smile that was itching his lips
"the fries and milkshakes combo?"
he shook his head "the pouring fries on top of the milkshake,"
mia smiled shyly and sighed "well... this way there's a perfect ratio between fry and milkshake,"
liam nodded "uh huh,"
the red-haired girl gave him a look as she kept eating, the two fell into a long silence, eating their food and glancing at each other every so often, wondering how to start up the conversation again...
"you didn't enjoy the bonfire."
mia had finished her fries and was sipping her milkshake. her eyes shot up at him and she set her cup down, clearing her throat quietly. he hadn't asked the question... it sounded more like an observation. as though he'd paid attention to her.
"no... it wasn't my preferred way so spend the night." she admitted, dusting her hands together as she finished her plate and folded her arms on the table.
"let me guess, not your thing?" he asked
mia shrugged "i mean, it was fine, but spending time with a bunch of teenagers getting drunk on the beach is stupid to me..." she said truthfully
liam tilted his head "so... you think you're above that?"
she furrowed her brows, taken aback "um, no. it's just not my style." she said offended
"hey, i was just asking-"
"by being insensitive." mia finished, glaring at him
"how am i being insensitive?" liam questioned, suddenly confused. he didn't get what her problem is... he was just asking a question, wasn't he?
"you tourists all waltz in here like you own the place and trash our beaches-"
"we were basically the only tourists there-"
mia rolled her eyes, standing up "i'd like you to take me home."
liam stared at her. what was this girl's problem? she was on edge about everything he said - which wasn't anything wrong. at least he didn't think so. why was she coming at him all of a sudden when he was helping her?
in her eyes, what this boy didn't see was that mia was exhausted and frustrated, which are two things that catalyze her lashing out at people around her. and she didn't like how he assumed that she thinks she's better than everyone else, how could she when she feels so small & invisible most of the time?
"fine," liam sighed heavily, getting out his wallet to put a few dollars for the bill on the table and get up
mia walked past a waitress and smiled tiredly "thanks barbara,"
"you going to be okay?" the older woman asked pointedly as she glanced between her and liam
mia nodded "yeah, don't worry. i'll see you tomorrow,"
"alright hun,"
the pair headed to liam's car and there was a tense silence for the remainder of the short ride to mia's house. she had her arms folded and her hands buried in liam's hoodie sleeves, staring out the window while he just focused on the road, still wondering what he said wrong.
liam pulled up at her house "home sweet home,"
the girl silently unbuckled her seatbelt and got out the car, and liam quickly followed
mia glanced back at him when she got to her door and furrowed her brows "um, what?"
"what kind of gentleman would i be if i didn't walk you to your door?" he asked with a charming smile
"you didn't walk me, you followed me so that's more so stalker-like than gentleman-like." she said bluntly, taking her keys out her bag to open her door "goodnight."
liam opened his mouth to say something but was met with the slam of her front door in his face. he exhaled deeply and ran his hand through his curls
"well, that was fun," he mumbled sarcastically as he turned around and walked down her porch steps
