Everything was dark. Spyro felt his head spinning. Why was he feeling so cold? So alone?
What's the last thing that I remember? He asked himself. Nothing made any sense to him. He was fighting Malefor, a last battle filled with fire, ice, earth and electricity. But then, he remembered. Cynder!
He searched everywhere, but all he could see around was darkness. He needed to know she was alright. What happened with the fight? Did they win? Was the world destroyed? If that happened, then he failed. Even when he prepared for so long, failing would destroy everything that he believed in. And even worse, he would lose everyone he cared for. The guardians, Hunter, Sparx... Cynder.
It can't be. He kept telling himself. Come on, remember. What happened?
Then, a flash of memory came to his head. Malefor was gone, imprisoned by the former purple dragons' spirits. Cynder and I saw everything... but then...
Suddenly, sound started to hit the back of his head. Like a gentle whisper, it was calling his name. "Spyro..."
Who is it? He didn't recognize that voice. It was too far. But then, it started to sound louder. "Spyro." sounded again. His gaze was filled with nostalgy. This voice was softening Spyro's fears.
Maybe I know this voice... Is... is that you? He thought, while a blinding light started to surround him. The darkness was over, and now, he was opening his eyes again.
"Spyro!"
He saw just in front of him Cynder's concerned eyes. He was lying in soft grass, with yellow flowers all around them. A few oak trees could be seen not so far away. But all that Spyro could see right now was Cynder. She was very frightened, but when Spyro opened his eyes, her expression lightened.
"You're awake!" She shouted.
"Cynder... what?... what happened?" Said Spyro, while trying to stand up.
"Don't force yourself, your body needs to rest."
While trying to move, Spyro understood that she was right. Everything hurt. His wings, his talons, even his snout. But at least he wasn't alone like he feared. He was with Cynder, and that's everything he wanted.
"What about you?" Spyro asked, while looking at Cynder's slim body.
"I'm fine, just very tired. But I was really worried about you. That last thing you did was... incredible." She was looking at him with awe, like he was someone else. Spyro didn't know if he liked that. But something else was on his mind.
"What I did? What do you mean?" He asked, very confused. Cynder looked at him, a little worried.
"You don't remember what happened?"
"No... not much after Malefor was sealed."
Cynder's gaze was different. Spyro couldn't tell if she was disappointed or relived, but there was something that she wasn't telling him.
"You saved us" Cynder said "You saved us all. The dragons, all creatures... the whole world. I don't know how you did it, but it was... amazing."
Spyro was looking at her in silence, but then decided that he needed to move. There was something out of place around them. He started to look at the place they were standing, and Spyro noticed that Cynder was looking at him, expectant. Soon, Spyro understood why. They were standing on top of a floating island. At the distance, he could see that many other islands were floating as well.
"How is this possible?" Asked Spyro, very confused.
"I don't know. It looks very similar to Malefor's lair, but... somehow natural."
Spyro started to think fast. If this happened to where they were standing, maybe it happened in the whole world. What kind of consequences could this mean to the dragons, and any other living thing? It could be dangerous, and Spyro wanted to know that his friends at Warfang were alright.
"We need to get back to Warfang." Said Spyro while walking to the edge of the island. "I want to know everything is fine with the others."
Cynder watched him with alarm and jumped right in front of him. Her turquoise eyes fixed on Spyro's, reflecting concern and severity.
"We're not going anywhere." She said, very confident. "Not until you rest and eat something."
"Eat? Look around! How could we find something on these islands?"
"I'll take care of that part. I'll fly searching for something while you rest. And that's an order, Spyro."
Spyro was looking at her a little frustrated, but at the same time, amazed by her strength and security. Something inside Spyro's chest started to pound, like a feeling that he had to listen to her. That nothing was more important right now than trusting in what Cynder was saying.
"Fine." Spyro said, while sitting down again. "I'll wait for you here. But be careful. If you see something dangerous, come back to me."
"What? You think I can't take care of myself?" She responded in a playful way. Spyro smiled at her, reflecting much more than he intended.
"I know you are the strongest of all dragonesses." When Spyro said that to Cynder, she couldn't hide a nervous gaze.
Spyro understood very fast what he just said. Did I go too far? Both stayed in an awkward silence for some seconds, only broken by Cynder when she turned around.
"Thank you, Spyro." She simply said, while she opened her elegant dark wings. With a graceful jump, she started to fly away from the island, and Spyro couldn't look any other way. He was watching every flap of her wings, and the elegant movement of her slim and pretty silhouette.
It was only after she was far away that Spyro relaxed on the soft green grass. He lay on his back, looking up to the sky. Everything looked normal, a bright blue sky, fluffy pretty clouds, and starting its way to the horizon, the sun was shining like always. Maybe this is normal now? Floating islands sounds very difficult to believe, but Spyro has seen many other weird things along his journey.
We've won. Malefor's gone. That thought was overwhelming. After discovering his path as the purple dragon, Spyro never thought about what could be next for him. Will everything be different? What am I supposed to do now? He couldn't stop thinking over and over again about his future. All he knew was fighting, and in a peaceful world, what's the meaning of being a warrior?
It was like meditation. He relaxed and stopped thinking in bad things. He needed to know what good things could help him decide his future. He loved his home and has befriended many creatures on his journey. Maybe he didn't need to think about that right now, but there was something else. He couldn't get out of his head the beautiful face of the black dragoness he spent so much time. The dragoness that shares more with him than age, strength and the destiny to defeat Malefor. In these moments of reflection and understanding, Spyro finally gets to the answer of what's next for him. Maybe the chains that kept Spyro and Cynder together were gone, but now they were bonded by much more than that, much more than a simple friendship. I've fallen in love with you, Cynder.
